ICONS OF PEACE

Eventually we would like to start discussions with artists and nonartists in reference to the creation of sculpture art that could be internationally recognized as symbols of Peace. We do maintain the website, www.iconofpeace.com, and would like to do what we can to establish an international sculpture symbol that reminds everyone immediately of Peace when they see it. We look forward to your comments, discussions, and thoughts on this process. Gary and Esperanza Jackson

I first thought of the people that are symbols... the face of Ghandi, Lennon, King, but they have passed and the feeling of their effort being transient is there. Then I considered what graphic shapes are instantly recognizable and realize that they are not as universal... two fingers spread, the 60's circle with descending dove lines. I see the pure stone sphere in your picture and think you have come through this same sequence of thoughts to this. It's good for a macrocosmic universal symbol.

However I wonder if a complex mixture of very small symbols and shapes set into, or as a relief, on a sphere emulating a two dimensional mandala that would look different from every perspective wouldn't be more introspective and personal, as well as universal.

I also think that a stained glass image, with many complex interwoven colors always brings a heartstopping awe to the viewer. A round image with the hint of a repeated pattern that appears illusive and not immediately obvious would draw one to feel peace while viewing it as well as become a focus for a peaceful meditation.

Just the first thoughts of a mature, visually educated, artist at heart.

Peace and Love,
papaed
