When it comes to peace, how would you describe yourself?
I am a born activist
What do you believe are the 'burning issues' today?
War, Poverty, Our Planet, Violence, Human Rights
What must we overcome to achieve peace?
Economic disparities
More
As long as we have the extreme economic disparities in today's world, the rich countries, especially the U.S. will continue to use brute force to maintain its dominance and privilege. Hatred and prejudice are useful ways to get public support for war but most wars are based on economic interest
Can we change the world?
Definitely
More about me
I've been a peace, social justice and feminist activist for many years in Canada. I have a new book coming out in March 2009 called Transforming Power: from the personal to the political that will deal with how movements are in the process of changing the world
Promise to respect others and refrain from spamming?
Yes

Quiet friend who has come so far,

feel how your breathing makes more space around you.

Let this darkness be a bell tower

and you the bell. As you ring,

what batters you becomes your strength.

Move back and forth into the change.

What is it like, such intensity of pain?

If the drink is bitter, turn yourself to wine.

In this uncontainable night,

be the mystery at the crossroads of your senses,

the meaning discovered… Continue

Imagine the world if the students in Tianamen Square had been victorious

Posted on June 4, 2009 at 5:38pm 0 Comments

Today is the 20th Anniversary of the massacre at Tianamen Square. Imagine how the world might have been different if those students and workers who so bravely and peacefully faced down soldiers and tanks would have triumphed in their demands for a more democratic society.

While the rest of the world pays tribute to those brave students and workers, including tens of thousands of people in Hong Kong the Chinese government is doing everything possible including banning Twitter and dire… Continue

We are all Tamil

If you are in Canada, take a minute right now and email your MP to ask him or her to support the demand that Canada use its influence to pressure the Sri Lankan government to call an immediate ceasefire and stop the slaughter of Tamil civilians.

The 200,0000 strong Tamil community in Toronto has been organizing an escalating series of massive non-violent protests in Toronto and Ottawa over… Continue

A Tribute to a Fierce Loving Mother

Posted on May 10, 2009 at 6:14pm 0 Comments

I don’t usually pay much attention to Mother’s Day. It isn’t just the commercialism. All holidays are commercialized. If the truth be told, I’ve never really valued motherhood all that much. I come from the generation of women that fought for women to be recognized for qualities beyond being mothers and wives. I grew up wanting to be the opposite of my mother who I saw as subordinate to a man who was unworthy of her. In the fierce battle to… Continue

Can you be feminist and anti-war? Are you kidding?

Posted on April 18, 2009 at 11:54pm 0 Comments

The day before yesterday still in a bit of a reverie after more than 24 hours without television, radio or newspapers in my friends' beautiful house in the bush near Victoria I was awakened on the ferry into Vancouver by an astonishing call. Sandra Martin from the Globe and Mail asked me, "Judy, is it possible to be a feminist and be anti-war?" What? I thought Where is this coming from.? Of course I knew of the Western outrage at the proposed family law in Afghanistan that made women's… Continue
