ive been studying psychology for a while now, and theres evidence to suggest that we store information in packets caled schemas - each schema is concerned with paticular information to do with a paticular topic
so when someone says librarian that schema with all the information in it comes up.
memories in our brain are better when they are rehearsed, so information that we have rehearsed/repeated comes to mind first
so if people keep telling you that a librarian wears glasses, isn't very social and loves books, then that is going to be your strongest thought that comes to mind when someone talks about librarians.
so thats how our mind works and thats why we catn avoid creating stereotypes - its key to survival as well because we know that if we walk down a dark alley there is a higher chance of being mugged than if we walked down the main road
stereotypes are key to how we understand the world and organise the information in our brain so that we can understand it
however, sometimes people over rely on stereotypes and apply them incorrectly to situations or else dont have a throuough understanding of the situation they are applying their sterotype to. when this happens bad shit incurs and people can become offended because of the other persons incorrect assumptions and ignorance... +there are worst consequences aside, but the offence one is the most common... as well as racism.
urm; im not sure im the best to ask these questions - i try not to think in terms of stereotypes - it only leads to misinterpreting human behavior and ideas; whereas i like to understand each person as an individual
the only time when thinking in terms of stereotypes is appropriate is when you're dealing with people who give in to stereotyping/trends - and i dont have many friends like that - by choice: i like to meet people who are interested in being themselves - regardless of what other people think they should be :-P
also, english, welsh, scottish and irish people are very different to each other - they are their own countries and so have their own individual cultures and stereotypes; therefore in answering your questions i will deal with it in terms of an english perspective
anyway; here goes:
1. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear / think of the UK? countryside; hills; dales; tea
2. State one interesting / weird / funny thing about the UK or its inhabitants. in order to start a conversation, it is typical to begin with talking about the weather; they like to drink tea
3. What is a typical Briton like? male: traditional - stubbornly sticks to long held beliefs; tough
female: caring; gossip; sensitive
both: drink tea
4. What stereotypes about the Brits do you Know and Believe to be true? British stiff upper lip - they like to keep things in, letting it build up rather than express their feelings and risk upsetting people; they like to drink tea
5. Who is, in your opinion, the most renowned / important / well-known Briton? (Dead and Alive) John Lennon; Captain Scott; Thomas Garway
6. In your opinion and from what you know and have heard, what do other nations think of the Brits (and their habits)? we're all either posh or cockney; we love the Royal Family;
7. What makes one British? What qualities and features should one possess to be rightfully called a Briton? moany, self-pitying nature; a love of tea
hit me with it: i'd love to help :-)
