More about me
I am a London-based writer/photographer specialising in the Middle East, human rights and collaborative arts. I lead the Jaffa Photography Project in Israel, visiting several times a year to work with Arab and Jewish teenagers on photography and narratives about their lives. If you'd like to support us, please message me for more info - for an audio-visual piece on the project, visit www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/interactive/2009/jan/15/jaffa-photo...
I have just written a short film exploring the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which I will co-direct with Palestinian film-maker Saeed Farouky. The film is drawn from our experience of interrogation by Israeli security services (Farouky for his Palestinian Arab identity, and me for my Arabic forename and activism). 'Leila', invites us to view war and intimacy as reverse sides of the same coin, through a series of interactions between Arab and Jewish lovers in Jerusalem. The fractured political landscape in which they exist is transposed to intimate territory, where no one is safe, rules are broken and power abused. We are seeking funding - any ideas are welcome.
