I believe war & conflicts are waged in order to promote financial / trade / resource interests of a certain group (or groups) whom are keen to keep their power / dominance. Regular people are then manipulated into fighting each other, so called, in the name of religion.
Regular people will not fight each other, knowingly, so that someone else can benefit from it. Therefore, they are manipulated in becoming more nationalistic, racist, extreme, radical, etc, in order to promote the interests of someone else.
