1a. "vote-flipping" strategies

Apparently, some early voters in various parts of the country have
seen their vote changed from Democrat to Republican - right in front
of their eyes! And THAT is only the machines that haven't been
programmed not to show it. Below are some tips, should you run into
such a situation. (Good luck.) Of course there are even larger
problems, such as the fact that NO candidate can be seriously
considered for the highest office in the land unless s/he has the
support of the big money. McCain and Obama are both recipients of
money from Goldman Sachs, Citibank, and - well you get it. We need to
entirely divorce the electoral system from money. And at the risk of
redundant sloganizing, YES WE CAN.

1. According to laws governing radio and television, THE AIRWAVES
BELONG TO THE PEOPLE. The corporations who are given the FREE use of
them have been in the past compelled to observe a 'fairness doctrine'
in editorial opinion, so that dissent might be heard. We must
pressure the government to reinstate the fairness doctrine. Our
political debates - like our public debate in general, are closed and
restricted to a very narrow set of ideas; the REpublicans and the
Democrats do not and can not offer us much of a choice. If Big Oil
wants war, we will go to war, and if Wall Street wants to steal our
money so they don't have to give up their yachts, both parties will
accommodate them in the end. The Libertarians, the Greens, Peace &
Freedom, and other minority parties might have something different to
say and we need to hear them. But that's not enough.

2. Paid political advertising must be outlawed. A responsible press
(including radio and tv) should cover politics as a matter of course.
and without compensation. If they won't, then the running of these
publicly owned media should be turned over to those who will. The
marketplace of ideas must not be about who can afford the loudest
amplifier. There are many intelligent voices in this country, right
and left, who are silenced for the most part because they will never
get the support of the richest few. Politics has become a spending
contest which is no more fair than a beauty contest or a boxing
match. Maybe less so. (Something similar needs to be done about
lobbyists.)

3. Several more Supreme Court decisions must be revisited by Congress
- yes they CAN. In the 1870s or thereabouts, a law clerk inserted a
clause comparing a corporation to a person. The question was never
debated, but it has been treated as settled law. In the late 20th
century, a decision equated money with speech. That, you might say,
was the death of any egalitarianism left over from the former 200
years. These decisions and others (patenting life forms, for
instance, and allowing private property to be confiscated in the name
of public domain, then handed over to private interests) are a deadly
weight on our freedoms and traditions.

There are many, many related reforms I would suggest, but without a
modicum of equality, which I believe could be attained by following
steps 1 through 3, we can't begin to discuss other matters. We're
getting close to what was said of the USSR in the 1980s: The people
have no government - and the government has no people.

BELOW: what to do if your friendly voting machine overturns your
vote.....................

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yesterday, VelvetRevolution.us' election integrity expert Emily Levy
suggested that when this problem occurs, voters should first tell
officials, and ask them to remove the machine from service.
Then...Alert everyone else in line waiting to vote which machine
caused the problem, and warn everyone else not to use it!
These are among the steps she recommends, with which I strongly concur:
Call poll supervisors to observe the problem
Fill out a problem report
Refuse to vote on that machine
Request that the machine be taken out of service
Get a serial number of the machine if possible (may be unlikely in
many cases)
Tell other voters not to vote on that machine
Call county/town election office
Call local reporters
Call voter problem hotlines (eg. 866-MYVOTE1 and 866-OUR-VOTE)
Contact bloggers and Election Integrity websites.
Raise holy hell.
It's actually much simpler.
You can avoid the problem of a machine shifting votes from Democrats to Republicans or from Republicans to Democrats by NEVER voting for Democrats or Republicans.
You can instead CHOOSE to vote for Nader, or the Green Party or a Socialist or simply stay home refusing to support the bastards that are screwing you.
Voting for Nader, or the Green Party or a Socialist is not irrelevant rebellion.
Voting for a Democrat is complicity in the killing of people and the theft of their resources.
Yes and that's what I will do - but we really need to work on a vote reform plan in order that such a vote would be anything more than a secret act of irrelevant rebellion.
Well i think we need to take this to the next step. But even if we
got a viable national candidate, the voting machines would throw the
election. The debate machine - for want of a better term - would cut
him or her out (as they do now). The media would ignore him or her
until the candidate got strong enough to be mocked and laughed at.
Billions would be poured into oppoing any new candidate or idea. So
we need to go after the system. The only way I know how to do that is
to spread ideas around. The first of them is that the system is
rigged, fixed, unfair, money-driven, out of our hands and out of
control. It's even more important in its enormity than the Obama or
McCain non-choice. Unless we can convert our voting system into an
instrument of the will of the people, we are lost. The voting
machines are part of the problem. Not the only part, but if we fixed
all the other parts, we'd still have to go after the machines. So why
not tackle and expose them first? It's a perfectly blatant example
that most people can understand. Even Republicans who most profit by
it - some of them oppose it. Every time another voter apprehends that
the emperor is naked, every time an obedient subject becomes a
skeptic, we win a little bit. Enough little wins and - who knows?
The point is that since neither the Democrats nor the Republicans are apt to rein in the US military killing machine, and since neither is about to drastically cut the military budget, voting for either is complicity in the killing of innocent people.
Thus, since it is highly unlikely that a progressive candidate will win, worrying about or talking about voting machines is a distraction.
They are not the problem. Instead, it's just another round of the Democrats trying to get people to line up on their side by playing victim, making believe that it's only Republicans who try to steal elections.
In addition, given that the bulk of the voting machines were purchased by Democrats, don't you think that they had a reason for doing so? Do you really think that they are stupid and honest?
They are neither.
Do you really think that the Democrats will not use them to their own advantage? That they will not try to steal as many votes for Obama as the Republicans will steal for McCain?
Rather than focus on an issue that the Democrats are trying to use to manipulate people, why not focus on issues that actually matter?
There seems to be many "distractions" in this election. I love people who go around telling everyone else how responsible they will be for everything. You know each day we wake up & go to work we are part of the machine. Each day we spend on the grid we are part of the machine. As long as we are part of the machine in anyway we too are responsible for what the f**king machine does. So are you ready to go off the grid? Could you even do it if you wanted to? What's gonna happen if every progressive in the country votes for Cynthia McKinney? If I was a betting person (and I'm not) I'd bet the country would still wind up with Obama or McCain. As a matter of fact it would probably be McCain. So how would it even help? It seems to me that no matter which way I vote or even if I don't vote I don't get what I want so what the heck are we all talking about? What fing difference does any of this shit make!!!!!!
Your right, you're all right. But what difference does it make?
What can be done to make a meaningful change?
I can only think of one direction that might make a difference and I sure as heck ain't gonna talk about it here.
Love & Peace
Mary
Protect Your Vote More Info
Election Day is less than two weeks away. You have been preparing for
months to ensure that women's voices and issues are heard on November
4; now is the time to make sure your vote is counted.
http://www.eac.gov/voter/how-to-contact-your-state-election-office
Be Sure That You Are Registered to Vote
https://ssl.capwiz.com/aauw/e4/nvra/?action=form&state=
Be sure that you are registered to vote. Visit the National
Association of Secretaries of State website at CanIVote.org to check
whether or not you are registered to vote at your current address. If
you know that you are not registered to vote, or that your address
needs to be updated, you can register to vote online. Voter
registration deadlines in some states have already passed. See a list
of voter registration deadlines for all states here.
If you won't be able to make it to your polling place on Election
Day, request an absentee ballot. The League of Women Voters Education
Fund's Vote411.org website has an online absentee ballot request
tool. You can also visit GoVoteAbsentee.org for more information.
Some states have already begun early voting, where you can vote in
person, without an excuse, in advance of Election Day. Contact your
state election office to see if this is an option in your state, and
avoid the lines on Election Day.
Be Prepared on Election Day
Find your polling place ahead of time. You can locate your local
polling place using your zip code at Vote411.org or
MyPollingPlace.com.
Find out which forms of ID your state requires by visiting the
Election Protection website at 866ourvote.org, and make sure to bring
those forms of ID with you.
Know Your Rights
If you are an eligible voter, you have the following rights:
If your name is not on the official voter list but you believe you
are eligible to vote in that precinct, even if an election official
challenges your vote, you have the right to cast a provisional ballot.
If you are in line when the polls close, you are entitled to vote no
matter how long it takes to get to the booth.
In many states, employers must allow you time to vote at some point
during the day. You can't be fired for being late due to long polling
lines. Check your personnel policies with your employer.
You have the right to vote without being intimidated by anyone.
Visit the Election Protection website at 866ourvote.org for more
information on your rights.
Know the Issues
Find out where the candidates stand on issues important to women and
girls. AAUW's voter guides will help voters make informed decisions
on where candidates in the presidential race and in hot congressional
races stand on AAUW issues.
AAUW's Congressional Voting Record for the 110th Congress gives our
members and the public critical information about how all members of
Congress voted on AAUW priority issues.
Encourage Others to Vote
Make voting a social outing; bring your friends and neighbors with
you to vote.
Wear your "I Voted" sticker the rest of the day to show your
coworkers that you voted, and encourage them to vote, too.
Forward this alert to your friends and family.
What if Something Goes Wrong?
First, document it. If there are specific individuals challenging
your right to vote, intimidating voters, or interfering with the
process, try to get their names. Write down exactly what happened,
including the time of day, descriptions of the people involved, and
any other details you can remember. A cell phone camera could be very
useful in this process, if you have one.
Then, report it. There are many organizations that will be working to
respond quickly to complaints of voter intimidation, suppression, and
fraud. Here's who to call.
1-866-OUR-VOTE. This hotline has been set up by the nonpartisan
Election Protection coalition to ensure that all voters have an equal
opportunity to participate in the political process. They have
hundreds of lawyers standing by to immediately respond to problems at
the polls. Call as soon as possible after you encounter problems.
Voters who believe they have been the victim of racial discrimination
in voting should contact the U.S. Department of Justice at 1-800-253-
3931 in addition to the 866-OUR-VOTE number.
For more information, visit AAUW's Voter Education Campaign.
Together, we can ensure women's voices and issues are heard on
Election Day.
5. powervote.org: Big Big News: Live Al Gore Webcast!
Posted by: "realitee1" realitee1@yahoo.com realitee1
Date: Sun Oct 26, 2008 12:32 am ((PDT))
On October 29th at 8pm Eastern, Al Gore will be speaking to Power
Vote groups across the country in a live webcast!
This is huge.
Gore will be acknowledging your incredible work on the Power Vote
campaign, driving home the extraordinary importance of young people
taking action to halt our Climate Crisis, and calling us to hold our
elected officials accountable for repowering America through our
voice and our VOTE on November 4.
http://events.powervote.org
Right now nothing is more important than seizing the opportunity to
fight global warming at the most important possible battleground: the
ballot box. And no one understands this more than the world's
leading clean energy advocate and our favorite Nobel Peace Laureate.
We're going to be kicking off 6 days of hard core Get Out the (Power)
Vote campaigning between October 29 - November 4, and Gore's talk
with all of us will be an incredible and inspiring launch pad for
action. But even before the 29th, we have some work to do. We need
all of you to organize viewing parties in every city and on every
campus in the United States.
http://events.powervote.org
Invite friends to your dorm room, reserve a classroom on campus, work
with campus or local environmental groups, get a local movie theater
to let you use it for the night, or find a projector and the side of
a building...
When Mr. Gore is finished, take the opportunity with your captive
audience to strategize your plan of attack for Getting Out the
(Power) Vote in your local community in the days leading up to
November 4.
We'll have everything you need (including sexy Power Vote door
hangers!), and for the first 100 viewing parties that register your
pizza tab is going to be picked up by us!
Please join us on our national conference call Wednesday, October
22nd, 9:00 PM EDT for all the details. Number: (319) 279-1000, Code:
1050724*
We want to specifically say thank you to Al Gore and our great
