MS Excel 2013 – “There was a problem sending the command to the program”

When you try to open Excel sheet you may receive this error message - “There was a problem sending the command to the program” However the error message may be dissimilar depending upon the Windows operating system. So, in this post we will show you how you can fix the above error message by yourself. You will not need to hire any technical person for fixing the problem. Within few simple steps you can easily fix them up, but before that let us know the symptoms of this error.

 

Symptoms


When you open any Excel sheet or a shortcut to an Excel workbook, Excel starts. But the Excel sheet does not get open and then you get an error message. As I earlier mentioned that error message may be dissimilar according to the version of Windows that you are using.

In Windows 8 and 7, you will receive this error message - There was a problem sending the command to the program.

 

In Windows XP, you will see this error message - Cannot find the file 'path ' (or one of its components).

In Windows Vista, you will receive this error message - Windows cannot find 'FilePath\FileName', Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

 

Solutions

So, if you are getting the above error message while opening any MS Excel workbook, then don’t get worried or think to uninstall Office and re-install it. Follow the below solution to fix this error – “There was a problem sending the command to the program”

For Microsoft Excel 2013 and 2010

1.       Click the File tab, and then click Options.

2.       Click Advanced, come down to the General section, and then clear the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) check box in the General area.

3.       Click OK.

For Microsoft Excel 2007

1.       Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click on Excel Options.

2.       Click on Advanced, and then clear the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) checkbox in the General area.

3.       Click OK.

For Microsoft Excel 2003

1.       Go to Tools menu, click Options.

2.       Click the General tab, and then clear the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) checkbox

3.       Click OK.

Recommended solution
