"They have a right to self-defense," say the talking heads.
"If this were happening here, you know we'd do the same."

How did this word defense become so corrupted?
When they changed the name of the Department of War?
It's 1984, Newspeak. Everything means its opposite.

What kind of game is this?
Isn't defense when you're pushing back against an invader,
blocking the objects being lobbed into your territory?
When you're the one lobbing the objects,
charging into the other team's territory with all you've got,
isn't that offense?

Somebody throws a bottle at my little sister,
and I knock it down, obviously, that's defense.
If he keeps doing it and doing it, and I break his arm,
that may be offense, but most people would excuse it
under the extended idea of self-defense.
But smashing him into a bloody pulp?
Killing his whole family?
Setting fire to his apartment building,
destroying his neighborhood,
taking out all electricity and water,
all the doctors and hospitals,
and watching comfortably
while anyone connected to him dies and dies and dies?

To call this "self-defense" with a straight face is an abomination.
It seems a lot more like murder to me.

What "self" could possibly feel defended by all this bloodshed?

The idiocy of Hamas lobbing their pitiful rockets into Israel is beyond belief.
What could that possibly accomplish, beyond taunting this giant nuclear power,
bristling at every edge with U.S. weaponry, and an army that's NEVER stood down,
into further outrages?
Is that the strategy?
To goad the monster into an even greater monstrosity
that will turn public opinion against it in sympathy with its victims?
How many innocent Israeli and Palestinian lives is that worth?

The insanity of Israel's overwhelming, crushing response
to Hamas's puny provocation is beyond belief.
Do they really think they're going to get away with this?
Do they really think what they're doing isn't transparent?
How can they dare to call themselves a religious people?

But, someone might say, it's not the people, it's the leaders.
But, someone else might answer, there are no leaders without followers.
People get the leaders they allow to lead them.
Who would have such leaders?

If someone in Tijuana lobbed homemade rockets into San Diego,
no doubt, Bush or Bloomberg or any of the other talking heads
would happily grind all of Baja California,
and half of Mexico, while they're at it, into dust.
They might even nuke it, if they thought the wind was right.
Better, annex it. Give it to Blackwater as a training ground
for future liberation of terrorist territory.
And wouldn't Fox News cheer them on?
Wouldn't most of our beloved country just start putting flag stickers on their cars?
U! S! A!

Individual human lives? They don't seem to matter.
Collateral damage in the great game of political football.
What matters is, who's winning.
Truth? It matters least of all.
