Oct 5,1877 Chief Joseph-Nez Perce surrender speech!

When I look at this as well as the history of how he led his people and tried to get them to Canada,I think of the strength and courage it must have taken him to say all of this!I heard his speach in a movie when I was a child watching it with my mom, when I looked at her,she was crying, and i seen alot of bitterness come out of her like no other! In her,I saw all the anguish, pain and suffering that we Native Americans have suffered through out history and still do,but what I got from hearing the speach is knowing what to do and know that it is the right choice for the people. It was a tough choice I'm sure for Chief Joseph to have made,he had to make a choice for his people and that is what he did,His words have rung loud in my head and in my ears for a longtime,I did a drawing lastnight to honor this man,not because he was a chief, but because he was a true leader in every sense, like so many in the past!
It takes more then just brute strength to lead a people, some of the toughest choices fall on this leader and he is the one who has to decide what is right for the people! So before you cast judgement on who your leader is,look at all the choices he/she has to make! This means all races of people, whether religious, political, cultural,it means that we have chosen that person to lead and we as a people no matter what part of the world you come from, should support your leader in anyway!

THE ACCOUNT OF WHAT HAPPENED:
Joseph was chief of the Nez Perce, a Native American tribe of the Wallowa Valley in Northwest Oregon. In 1877 the Nez Pierce were ordered to a reservation, or special land reserved for Native Americans. The Nez Pierce refused to go. Instead, Chief Joseph tried to lead 800 of his people to Canada. Fighting the U.S. Army all along their 1100 mile journey, they crossed Idaho and Montana. They were trapped just forty miles from Canada. After a five-day fight, the remaining 431 remaining Nez Perce were beaten.
It was then, on October 5, 1877 at Bears Paw, that Chief Joseph made his speech of surrender.
THE SPEACH:
"I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed.
Looking Glass is dead. Toohulhulsote is dead.
The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes or no.
He who led the young men is dead.
It is cold and we have no blankets.
The little children are freezing to death.
My people, some of them, have run away to the hills and have no blankets, no food.
No one knows where they are--perhaps freezing to death.
I want to have time to look for my children and see how many I can find.
Maybe I shall find them among the dead.
Hear me, my chiefs. I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever".
