The Quadrophenia of Life

As people, we are role-players. We play the wife, the husband, the entrepreneur, the artist, the scientist, the angry person, the jealous person, the happy person, the breadwinner, the teacher, the tailor, the soldier, the sailor, and a whole plethora of other roles that separate us from who we truly are. There is no true relationship for many of us most of the time.

As we interact with other people, we set up false mind-made identities or ego-based roles.
We could describe this as 4 different roles that act as a barrier between true
communication and relationship. For each of us there is the role we perceive ourselves as
having at any given time and the role that we perceive our partner or significant other as
having. So at any one time when we communicate with another person, there are often 4
false identities interacting with each other, the result being that there is always conflict.
This is the quadrophenia of life.

The essence of true communication is being aware of who we truly are as often as
possible. That is, the dissolution of the false mind-made identities through the simple
awareness of the present moment and the stillness beneath the surface of the mental
chatter in our heads. To do this is simple, all we need to do, is to notice and be attentive
to our breathing, our surroundings, our feelings and our thoughts. Through this process
we are aware, and when there is awareness, there is true relationship in everything we say
and do. The mind made false identities or roles dissolve. Consciousness flows through
our being and positive actions and behaviour results as we move deeper and deeper into
the collective consciousness of who we truly are – that is, we are consciousness itself.
