Sonia Rykiel To Open Shop-In-Shop At Bloomingdale's

Sonia Rykiel debuted a shop-in-shop concept on Monday that will be a leased space on the designer fourth floor of Bloomingdale's flagship in New York City, according to WWD.

The Bloomingdale's shop marks "a significant first step in the brand's retail expansion in North America," stated Eric Langon, chief executive officer of Sonia Rykiel, to WWD.

"New York has always been a strategic city for the house as its dynamic spirit and energy directly channels the Sonia Rykiel woman."

This move will mark the brand's first leased space in America and highlights the company's desire to expand within the country.

A freestanding store is scheduled to open in New York next year, which will be Sonia Rykiel's first freestanding store in North America.

The Sonia Rykiel brand and its contemporary counterpart, Sonia by Sonia Rykiel, are sold via the wholesale channel to U.S. and Canadian stores, as WWD reported.

According to Vogue, Sonia Rykiel launched her namesake brand in 1965 where two years later, she made her Vogue debut as "the queen of the Laura boutique,ravishing red-headed Sonia Rykiel."

The Laura boutique was a reference to the boutique in Galeries Lafayette that had the lace-front "braless dress," according to Vogue.

Christian Lacroix stated to Vogue in 2008 of Rykiel, "She is a paradox. She's elegant and erotic, distant and sensual."

A notable quote from Rykiel is what she told WWD and as reported by Vogue.

"People said making clothes inside out was not proper. I disagreed, because clothes that are inside out are as beautiful as a cathedral."

Although Rykiel is no longer at the helm of her namesake brand she founded, we foresee her legacy carrying on as the company looks to expand its footprint in North America.
