Misty Copeland Reveals Her 3-Step Beauty Routine

When you meet American Ballet Theatre soloist Misty Copeland in-person, we'll be honest—it's tough not to stare. As her jaw-dropping new commercial for the sportswear apparel company Under Armour clearly reveals, the girl's bod is bananas.

Obviously, eight hours of dancing a day does a body good. But when we visited Copeland at her Upper West Side apartment a few months back to talk about her new memoir, and her path to becoming a star dancer in one of the world's most celebrated ballet companies, we also wanted to find out about how she keeps her skin and hair looking as gorgeous as the rest of her. ABT's two-month season takes a toll, Copeland says: "We're always wearing a bun or some crazy hairpiece or a wig in our performances, and heavy makeup, so by the time the season ends, our skin and our hair is just a mess. When we're done, I have a lot of hair breakage in the front. I do a deep conditioner, but it really doesn't do much; the hair just needs to grow back. In the offseason, I try to wear it down."

Keeping her skin clear and healthy during the season is equally challenging. We asked Copeland to give us a step-by-step rundown of what she does to keep breakouts and other skin problems at bay when she's dancing in full makeup all day—and all night—long.

FULLY MADE UP

"We're sweating nonstop in heavy makeup when we're dancing, so when the season is over, I don't wear much makeup. [What I'm wearing here] is stage makeup—but in my day to day life I use Neutrogena Clear Skin Matte Powder, MAC Studio Tech foundation, MAC blush in 'Peachy Keen,' L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara, and my MAC brow pencil. I'm all about the eyebrows! When I'm dancing in the studio, sometimes they're all over the place."

REMOVAL OF MAKEUP

"My routine is pretty simple. I peel off my [false] eyelashes first, and then use these Neutrogena make-up remover cleansing towelettes to take off the rest."

CLEANSING

"I've used Proactiv for a long time. I used to use the three-step system, but now I only use the renewing cleanser. My skin breaks out occasionally from putting on stage makeup six days a week, so using this is helpful."

"My skin tends to be dry, and it gets really dehydrated from the heavy makeup during performance season. I like to use a heavier moisturizer like Olay's active hydrating cream, especially after performances."
