New York Fashion Week Morning Report, Day 6
Consider the bend rounded. New York Fashion Week still has a handful of heavyweights yet to show – Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler and Ralph Lauren among them – but by Tuesday, the end is in sight. Soon enough, the questing class will be London-bound.
That is not to say there is nothing to see, and Tuesday promises to be a full day. Tory Burch kicks it off at 9 a.m., the rare haute bohemian early riser. Vera Wang follows at 11. Her uptown reputation precedes her, and she will always be trailed by bridal trains. But her show is still worth a look if only because she continues to surprise: Last season found her making an unexpected foray into grunge. And pity the poor soul who tries to guess what Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte have up their sleeves at noon. They are the minds behind last season’s most unexpected offerings, a set of Star Wars gowns.

Whether or not interplanetary ships appear, by afternoon, the stars align. Rihanna may be gunning to be New York Fashion Week’s most omnipresent celeb, but rarer sightings rule the day. Britney Spears’s new lingerie collection debuts midafternoon at, where else, the New York Public Library. It is followed by Serena Williams’s first HSN fashion show, and, United States Open defeat or no, her bestie Caroline Wozniacki has sworn she will be in the front row.
For those in search of red-carpet wear, the day is full, too: Jenny Packham, Naeem Khan and Oscar de la Renta all send their finest out. But there is a time to frock, and a time to rock. Fashion Rocks, the style-meets-music mega-show, returns in the evening, with Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez, Duran Duran and Kiss set to perform. The only place you’ll find an odder mix is at Paper Magazine’s 30th anniversary bash.
