As a huge football fan and admittedly, frequent FIFA 14 player, I simply couldn’t wait to get my hands on FIFA 15 Coins. Until FIFA 13, I found that neither EA Sports‘ game nor the competitor (Konami’s PES) satisfied my idea of virtual football anymore; I used to say that football games were in a limbo of sorts, and that perhaps only a mix of the best features of both could produce a truly compelling title.
This is the driving philosophy behind some of FIFA 15’s most drastic changes: an emotionally-driven football experience that rewards fundamental execution. Missing a shot by the shortest of margins, falling off-side with a goal so close. Replicating both the common response from real players, as well as the frustration of gamers, was something Channon and the team felt was always integral to the series’ aesthetic charm.
“If someone makes a mistake, or a great play, you’ll see the reactions from players: we’re really trying to put players into that moment,” Channon explains. Initially, I struggled to understand how that equates to a better gaming experience, if these artificial emotions “don’t change the gameplay fundamentals,” as Channon put it.
As well as this fans of different teams will perform differently depending on their real-world counterparts. Brazilian fans will be samba-ing it up in the Maracana while Lech Poznań and Man City fans will do the iconic Poznań celebration. Some of the world’s biggest teams’ classic songs will be blared out, while the commentators will pick up on the crowd mood and remark on it.
