That was followed by a two-goal outburst in a 4-3 loss to Glendale in the season-opener. Holcomb added another in the a 2-0 victory over Highland and made his third start at forward against South Pasadena in a first-round match of the Burroughs tournament Friday.

``I was expecting to play keeper this season,'' Holcomb said. ``I just have to thank the coach for giving me the chance.''

The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Holcomb has provided the offensive spark Wright was looking for on a team decimated by the graduation of 16 seniors from last year's Foothill League runner-up squad which finished 18-5-3.

``Last year, we had enough firepower and offense wasn't a problem,'' Wright said Adidas Nitrocharge Shoes. ``This year it was a big question mark. Our offense wasn't clicking and Chris has been the big blockbuster to make things happen by winning a lot of balls in the air.''

Senior fullback David Wisner, one of three returning starters along with center Erik Ideta and fullback Joey Trujillo, was sold on Holcomb's ability long before the start of the season. Wisner had watched Holcomb demonstrate his skills in the goal and in the field as an AYSO teammate for the past five years.

``I was telling coach Chris could play forward and get the headers,'' Wisner said. ``He finally tried him out and he's showed some potential. He's even surprised me.''

Holcomb said the rigors of diving as goalkeeper are more physically demanding than forward but he's discovered there are hazards in the field as well.

Holcomb was forced to leave the Highland match late in the second half after straining his groin and injured his left knee against Highland when he caught a cleat in mud. The injury forced him to sit out several workouts this week, and he will be forced to play with a knee brace in the Burroughs tournament.

While Holcomb has given Saugus a new dimension in the field, he has also given Wright a third keeper along with Romney and recently elevated Brian Ridder Discount F50 Soccer Sale Online. Wright said Holcomb's size and distance on drop kicks complements Romney's superb fielding skills.

``They are two different styles,'' Wright said. ``Chris is more of a technician, and Jason is a little better on the ground. I didn't have qualms about using either but it makes sense to have Chris up front where he is going to produce.''

Holcomb, however, isn't ready to completely relinquish his goalkeeping duties yet.

``It's nice to be running fast and heading balls but I want to switch back once in awhile,'' Holcomb said. ``I like scoring, but defense is good, too. I like to play both positions but it's better to be starting somewhere than sitting on the bench.''
