Saudi Arabia and the UAE have emerged as the biggest markets among GCC states for the deployment of renewable energy projects such as solar energy contrary to their most important possession, non renewable energy sources such as Hydrocarbons. All the major economies in GCC region produce electricity by using fossil fuels, but now they have began to realize the benefits of providing sustainable energy solutions to resolve some of the most urgent challenges.
Despite having the third largest oil reserves in the world, the UAE has probably the most ambitious renewable energy programme, certainly in the GCC region. The government of Abu Dhabi is investing in the construction of solar-powered Masdar City under the arcology project – Carbon Free City. The UAE’s interest in developing nuclear power plant is motivated by the need to develop additional sources of electricity to meet future electricity demand. Other GCC countries have such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman are working on power plant projects to ensure continued rapid development of their economy and meet future energy demand.
Middle East region is working on power plant projects mainly to deal with its water shortage problem. Some of the large-scale projects proposed and are ready to be completed include the Al Zour North IWPP project. With new technologies and developments in the energy industry, both electricity and water demand will soon to get fulfilled in these countries.
