The Carl Grant Events Center at Union University was filled with laughter as women enjoyed speakers, vendors, lunch and a fashion show at the Blossoming Into a Better You Women's Conference on Thursday.

Judy Arrington, community educator for West Tennessee Healthcare, organized the event. She said she wanted to give older women a chance to get out and have fun.

"We felt like we wanted to offer something locally for the ladies," Arrington said. "Often times, we're taking care of everyone else, but this is a time to take care of ourselves."

The conference was targeted for women 50 and older and lasted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Five speakers spoke on topics such as exercise, nutrition, the importance of laughter and women's health.

Arrington said she hoped the women left feeling refreshed with new knowledge about their health.

"We want them to have a time to laugh, learn, get educated and have a good time," she said. "We're talking about aging gracefully."

Martha Coleman said she attended the event with a group of friends from the Mature Advantage Club and her church. She said she always likes events where she can have fun with other women, and she wanted to learn about health issues.

"It's great, fun and informative," Coleman said. "They have talked about heart issues and diabetes, both of which I have. We're learning a lot."

Women at the event participated in a fashion show, modeling fashions for their age group. Coleman said that was her favorite part of the day, and she knew most of the women in the show.

Arrington said the fashion show was something she thought would be unique and draw women to the conference.

"Women love fashion," she said. "You don't have to look old when you're 50 and over."

Regina Smith, senior services manager for West Tennessee Healthcare, helped organize and advertise the event. She said she was glad to see so many groups of women bringing their friends. She said she hopes to continue the idea next year with more educational, fun events.

"We're touching on topics that pertain to women who are more seasoned in life," Smith said. "It's things that are specifically for them."

Laura Thomas, Lisa Smartt, Beth Parnell, Nicole Hancock and Hilary Keen were the speakers at the conference. There were also vendors from various local organizations.Read more here:sexy formal dresses
