Granted this is beginning to sound like we have schizophrenia, but if you think about what an identity obsessed society we are today, it relates to two concepts. 1) In the past, identity was more directly tied to regional, racial, gender, and social categories. 2) Today, those factors are important in shaping a negative identity. Being a very individualistic society, we still want those categories to matter, but don’t at the same time want them to determine identity, unless and individual chooses to take those categories and use them as part of his/ her unique perception of reality or cultural/ social tapestry. 3) At the same time, the vanguard that claims to value individualism still often discriminates, even openly or indirectly (possibly we all do). As a result, We like to claim these categories matter but are all part of an ‘equal playing’ field until you come to affirmative action on one hand, and then the more insidious forms of bigotry that still operate today by the elite. However, as you indentified, what often happens is that there is a sea of pressure/ voices out there that tries to push people to adopt a certain perception and behavior so that they can more readily reinforce other people’s self-perception. So “I am” becomes this great hallmark of Western Individualism while ironically actually encouraging people to be “we are” or “we are not”, or for someone else, “because he is, I am not.”

I have to agree. It just gets old hearing the constant negativity and junk that makes up so much of the background noise. It's not that there isn't a lot of wisdom out there as well, but it's also hard to have to deal with the voices that just bring me down, and all the opinions that it often seems are presented as facts.

I think you're trying to be nice about it. The less kind might say malevolent, reductive, and ill-informed individuals who have no real interest in using critical thinking dominate American politics. But, it’s also true that the loud voices are the ones that get heard. The pushy histrionics tend to get more media attention. I am sure there are more moderates out there, but they feel under pressure to appease the voices that dominate the media.
I try to take how much I dwell on the current state of affairs in measured dosages, or I just get burned out and discouraged.

I think the Republican party has lost all touch with reality by and large.
Part of it is that issues that have previously been left largely unquestioned, such as religion's role in society, Palestine, illegal wars, racism. All the hidden junk that has implicitly been buried in the Republican Party’s ideology is coming to light because they are being challenged like never before, especially by the intelligentsia, and the younger generation. This combined with the economy and the worldwide economic situation is resulting in their internal collapse. The face of American politics is changing I think.

It's been a weird couple of weeks with events: the Icelandic volcanco, sunken Korean ship, oil spill, UK elections, Arizona, Goldman Sachs....what next?

Sorry about the headache. You seem to be prone to bad ones. Not much helps me when I get a migraine.

Actually, that is largely hilarious. Alcohol and politics. Never a better mix. Who won?

It just annoys me to have to mess around with little details like that, but, sigh, it's part of life amid the 100,000,000 other details I have to resolve.

I take it the Korean gig no longer works for you then?

It does really affect me sometimes, but not as much since I am a little older than you and have a bit more history of residing in the US and Texas. Main things that hurt me are my wife's visa status, maintaining a credit history, and for jobs, getting my transcripts translated. Did law schools take the untranslated version of your transcripts then?

Glad to hear it. It started hitting me that maybe you had too many people telling you what to do. I've started feeling that way. Everything is good here. Moving back to the US before long. Very excited about it. Buying a nice house if it all comes together.
