In order to evolve from the present amorphous, vassalage citizens to the free citizens, we have to understand what freedom is. If we understand the concept of freedom and accept it as the way of life, we will become free citizens. And then we will reach the vision that we strive for.

The pressure of our environment is unbearable for sure. But the restrictions that we put upon ourselves are more unbearable. What are we without freedom, just “tools that speak” as Aristotle characterized slaves. What remains if we give up freedom- just gloomy and boring existence that hardly can be called life?
Yet, most people are willingly given up freedom, locking-up themselves into self made prison-in a narrow cell built of “I certainly must” and of “I mustn’t “. There is a little air and little light in that cell.
It is hard to breath and hard to see in that cell. One suffocates, decline and dies. If you ask people around you why they do it to themselves they will answer with surprise, that it clear by itself- fight for survival, which intrudes many duties and many renunciations. In order to survive they kill the life inside them.
Obviously, something doesn’t fit in. But indeed, the answer is very far from the truth. It’s all an excuse created to cover up the real reasons, because by the rule, people blurring real motives for their actions.

If we search a little bit numerous “I certainly must” and “I mustn’t do” we will find that very little truly serves for survival as the afore-mentioned purpose. The most things which we will find are aimed to satisfy one totally different need. That is the need to prove themselves to others and to themselves, in order to extract recognition, approval, appraisal, admiration. That is the men’s need to prove to themselves that they are better then many others and that they are not behind in overall but crazy race for life. That is the need to satisfy superego.

Man turns himself into a slave, into tool of its own vanity, born of deep inner uncertainty and all-pervasive fear. There are much surplus nonsense among the numerous “must” and “must not” which suffocates and destroys people. How much needless nonsense, how much destructive force, sometimes even criminal there is in all that.

Self imposed slavery is cruel and it is imposed not because of something worth and important. The biggest enemy of freedom is not the power openly imposed by the environment, but our own vanity, which leads us to slavery.
