Religion aims to bring awareness and a personal responsibility to a "common preciousness" [thanks Atma] with the promise of a better community. Let them work their magic in unspoken independence and we double our chance of good outcomes. Mix them up and we risk problems. Look to History.
The Kingdom is your essence.

Here Jesus points the way to hidden dimensions, not simply the conventional notion of Heaven. When you go inside, you are aware of activity such as thoughts and feelings. Your instinct is to pursue the activity that brings pleasure and avoid that which brings pain. But Jesus speaks of a completely different inner reality. The consciousness hidden behind your thoughts is the consciousness that upholds all intelligence in the universe. It is personal and collective at the same time. The personal is made up of your relationships, the collective is made up of the myths and archetypes common to all cultures. Both dimensions are you, and you can begin to connect the two as a bridge to the sacred.

Exercise
Sit quietly when you have time to be alone and undisturbed. Choose a prayer that you feel comfortable with—or better yet, a meaningful phrase from that prayer. Silently repeat the words to yourself, letting them settle naturally into your awareness, becoming softer and deeper. Continue for at least five minutes and up to 20 minutes. This kind of sacred repetition is common to every religious tradition.

When you open your eyes, let your gaze settle on a sacred image, such as an icon, a picture of Jesus, a statue of Mary. Ask this figure to embody itself through you. Gently feel a connection. Don’t force this, just put out the intention that the archetype of Christ, Mary, or a chosen saint merges with your being. Some people use angels for this purpose, which is the same as asking for the essence of God to reach you.

Now contemplate the specific qualities you want, such as love, compassion, or forgiveness. These are archetypal energies that you are calling on our higher archetype, you will find yourself thinking and doing things you never expected as the person you know. Although Jesus refers to God as the Father, sprit isn’t bound by gender.

This exercise works to remove the artificial boundary between the isolated ego self and the higher self.

“Ask and you will receive” may seem to be one of Jesus’s most extravagant promise. We have all asked and not received. To find out what Jesus actually meant, then, we have to answer a few questions: Who is asking? Where is the request going? Whom does it reach? For most people, the asking comes from the ego, with its unending stream of desires. The request is going out into empty space or to a vaguely remembered God from childhood. The receiver of the request is unknown.

What this means is that asking and receiving are disconnected. Indeed, they must be, because in everyday awareness the world is separate from us and fragmented into millions of isolated events. However, at a deeper level everything is unified and whole. When you ask for anything, the One is asking the One, God is asking God. And there is always a response.

Exercise
Learn to ask in a new way, by expecting every wish to bring a response. Take the attitude expressed by the Persianpoet Rumi: “Ask all of yourself.” The mechanics of giving and receiving are inside you. Therefore, the next time you pray for something, or simply desire it, go through the following steps:

Express the desired outcome to yourself clearly.
Detach yourself from your request after you make it.
Take an undemanding attitude to the outcome.
Be open to whatever response the universe gives back.
Know that there is always a response.

In this case, “response” doesn’t mean a yes or no from God. There is no judge deciding whether you are worthy or not. Those perceptions were born of separation. When Jesus told his followers that God sees and knows everything, he was describing the complete intimacy between the self and the intelligence that pervades the universe. Since you could not exist without being part of that intelligence, praying to God is circular, a feedback loop.
