Canada-US border on Native land

Today big news! For the first day, border guards carry weapons and we need a RFID chip passport to enter the States. The Canada-US border is blocked at Akwesasne. The Mohawks are protesting for their security, since the armed guards are posted right inside a residential area of their community and there has been an increasing amout of violent incident against community members and elders lately. They say armed guards from a foreign power on their territory is a threat to their sovereignty.

The Mohawks are now being locked in themselves inside Akwesasne by NY police on one side and Cornwall police on the other... another step towards the North American Corps though the Joint Task Force Program, to prepare the NAU. They fear an escalation as in the 'Indian Summer" of 1990, when the Canadian army occupied Mohawk lands for over two months.

Sovereign Native nations are the greatest legal obstacle for the NAU. Mohawk communities were the scene of anti-terrorist army training last fall. Native communities and activists in Canada have also been largely targeted lately for the fact that they want to make an international stand for the recognition of their sovereignty during the Vancouver Olympics next winter.

Canada is one of the only 3 countries who didn't sign the UN Declaration of Indigenous Rights.

We received word today of the complete collaboration for our Peace Mission on the St-Lawrence 2009, from the Mohawk traditional council, who is based on the Great Law of Peace. It is time to unite nations in Peace and with recognition of our respective sovereignty. Peace be with all.
