Global Leadership Crisis

At the present moment the world society is being gradually strangled to death by a profound leadership crisis. Because of improper, unenlightened leaders the present world order is in a gradual process of disintegration, which if unchecked will eventually bring us to the point of complete global anarchy.

Why is this? Today's typical leader is more interested in what he can take than in what he can give. This creates a very unbalanced situation, which then filters down through all the levels of our global village creating unnecessary misery and anxiety for everyone. When the leaders are selfish, the people in general will also be selfish. In such an atmosphere the strong will rule and the weak will serve and no one will be happy, not even those who have managed to manipulate themselves to the top.

Where are the leaders who can reverse this downward trend and lead us out of this ever-increasing chaos? Sadly, our present leaders are ill equipped to do anything at all about it, because they are more interested in how much money they can stuff into their pockets while they are in office, than they are in what tangible service they can give to the citizens.

The qualities of the leaders in this age was predicted 5,000 years ago in the Srimad Bhagavatam as follows:

stri-bala-go-dvija-ghnas ca
para-dara-dhanadrtah
uditasta-mita-praya
alpa-sattvalpakayusah
asamskrtah kriya-hina
rajasa tamasavrtah
prajas te bhaksayisyanti
mleccha rajanya-rupinah

"These barbarians in the guise of kings will devour the citizenry, murdering innocent women, children, cows and brahmanas and coveting the wives and property of other men. They will be erratic in their moods, have little strength of character and be very short-lived. Indeed, not purified by any Vedic rituals and lacking in the practice of regulative principles, they will be completely covered by the modes of passion and ignorance."
--Srimad Bhagavatam 12.1.39-40

According to the Vedic wisdom, leaders are meant to be generous, courageous, determined, and resourceful. But instead we see these so-called leaders are manifesting the qualities of lust, anger, and greed. It's no wonder that people throughout the world are not happy.

What is the solution for this leadership crisis? We need now more than ever such ideal men and women of character who can provide global leadership by their mere example, whether or not they hold a big title or a big position. Such leaders are described as follows in the Bhagavad-gita:

yad yad acarati sresthas
tat tad evetaro janah
sa yat pramanam kurute
lokas tad anuvartate

"Whatever action a great man performs, common men follow. And whatever standards he sets by exemplary acts, all the world pursues." Bhagavad-gita 3.21

If such a class of saintly persons can now emerge on this planet, they will naturally provide the new standard of enlightened global leadership that our ever-increasingly fractured world needs now more than ever.
