There are an estimated 100 million land mines buried beneath the surface of this Earth. Someone steps on a mine every 19 minutes, usually women and children. Whole communities live in constant fear and terror. They cannot farm land, get water or even go to work or school safely.

These terrifying devices lie dormant long after wars have ended and wait in silence for innocent victims, some who were born after the conflict.

For those already maimed by these devices their physical injury limits their true potential. People with skills are unable to make valuable contributions to their communities, a contribution that they dearly want to make.

As a result we at the Sole of Africa have created our victims assistance programme

"Africa's Got Legs"

There are thousands of people in Africa who have lost their limbs, sight and hearing through the ravages of war primarily through landmines or UXO (Unexploded Ordance)

The Mineseeker Foundation with it's Sole of Africa initiative is focussed on rebuilding people's lives and communities by providing them with self-empowering and sustainable solutions.

...and it all starts with the legs....

Put Your Foot Down Now!

OUR MISSION AND OBJECTIVES

Our mission is to serve the disabled, to assess and treat the disabled with a multi-dimensional approach. Our services include:

Primary health care
Prosthetics / Orthotic Services
HIV/AIDS programme
Rehabilitation and skills development in order to fully integrate back into society

We endeavour to seize opportunities in order to improve systems, invent and disseminate new approaches and advance sustainable solutions that create social value. Ultimately we are driven to produce measurable impact by opening pathways for the marginalized and disadvantaged, and unlocking society’s full potential and improving the general quality of human life.

Mozambique was identified as one of 24 State Parties globally with significant numbers of landmine survivors, and with the greatest responsibility to act, but also the greatest needs and expectations for assistance in providing for the care, rehabilitation and reintegration of survivors.

PRIORITIES

Provide a Mobile Primary Health Care and Mobile Prosthetic Clinic to all disabled people, starting in the Northern Provinces of Mozambique: Tete, Manica, Zambezi, Nampula and Cabo Delgado respectively. The mobile service will address the challenge of disabled people living in rural areas that has to date limited access to rehabilitation and primary health care.

Provide primary health care services to individuals living in rural areas – including offering screening for HIV/TB. Most of thse disabled living in rural areas do not currently have access to health care.

Provide access to training on the use of assistive devices

Re-integration back into society –
Community analysis - Assessment of local community infra structure
Social groups
Religious structure
Socio-economic
Cultural
Patient analysis - Assessment of individual skills and abilities
Physical abilities
Emotional level of functioning
Literacy level
Socio-economic interaction
Religious orientation
Evaluation of individual (and group) needs and analysis
Support structures

Basic life and coping skills
Support to achieve pre-morbid level of functioning
Fitness to work assessment

Involvement of skills transfer to local citizens, ensuring continuity and sustainability of the project.
In collaboration with The Employment Bureau of Africa and our own network, effectively trace and record all Mozambican amputees.

Commence manufacturing of prosthesis and provide on-site overnight facilities and provide basic meals to patients during manufacturing of prosthesis.

100 prostheses to be manufactured per month, 1100 per year (with the clinic active for 11 months), and a total of 5500 over a five year period. If funding allows 180 prostheses could be manufactured per month and 9900 over a five year period.

Development and implementation of software program, with the creation of a database on patient and treatment details as well as the projected future treatment needs and estimated cost.

OBJECTIVES

Individuals living in isolation and deprived from social interaction as a result of disabilities and disease need social uplifting and integration back into society. People living in rural areas are often neglected, or due to logistical challenges do not have access to basic services. By implementing a Primary Care Mobile Clinic and Prosthetic Mobile Clinic these individuals can successfully be assessed and have their needs addressed.

A motivated productive society is the result of sound interaction between healthy individuals, families and society.

The objective is a holistic and multi–dimensional approach to bring change into the lives and families of those affected.

Identification of dysfunctional elements, personal or within the environment is needed to address and correct imbalances.

Unlocking of human potential through identification and development of personal skills and abilities will set a platform for motivated individuals.

The end product of these interventions is restoration and normalization of self-esteem, dignity, personal achievement and self-fulfilment.
