One of the mental dispositions that prevents peacemaking between the Palestinians and Israelis is that the conflict has been going on "for centuries." This is entirely untrue, and lends to a sense of hopelessness. Jews easily tell stories that, before 1947, they used to live side by side with Palestinians, and have no problem asking them to baby-sit their children.
Thus, if we examine events over the last 60 years - AND the UN's attempt to resolve the difficulties of those events for example, we can begin to piece together a way toward peace.

Dear Sie

I think that the reason you have not gotten a response to your questions of February 6th is that no one has a very satisfactory answer. How do you overcome centuries of enmity between Jews and Arabs? One thing is cetain. Continuing armed conflict will not do it, nor will walls of separation. Violence is not the answer. If that is so, then nonviolence based on mutual respect has to be the only other way. But then the question becomes, how do the adversaries on both sides overcome feelings of hate which have been instilled in them from birth? How do they get beyond fear to acceptance of each other? I wish there were simple answers to these questions, but I do not think there are.

yes I can ask them - however there seems to be so many different personal opinions I find it hard to get to the underlying causes of the outward violence. It seems to me that to have a sustainable ceasefire and eventually peace it is the deeper unmet needs that need to be addressed.

The big problem is the attitudes and policies of the government of Egypt which dislikes Hammas which is linked to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, an 'outlawed' movemnet but which is in the Parliament as 'independents'. There is a fear that the Israelis will just "dump" Gaza on Egypt. Since you had contacts with groups in Jordan, you might ask them to contact groups they know in Egypt to get an evaluation of Egyptian attitudes, both governmental (which is fairly clear) and non-governmental. I am going to rework my Gaza proposal under the title "Rebuilding Gaza is not enough" as the situation prior to the fighting was not satisfactory.

I am interested in why other neighbouring countries are not appearing to do much to support those traped in Gaza...could anyone shed some light on this complext situation...who does it serve in the region to keep this conflict going? I think this is much bigger than just between Israel and Palestine.
