How negative emotions affect the body

stress-postOne of the most damaging beliefs a person can have is that you have no control over the way you feel. That belief puts you at the mercy of the people and events of your life to go well in order to generate feelings of happiness within you. That always puts you in a place of disempowerment because it takes the power away from you and gives it to someone or something else, and with responsibility comes power. Giving someone else the power to control the way you feel can have disastrous consequences.

Did you know that your feelings affect the physiology of your body? It has been proven by science now that emotions have an effect on the body. Negative thoughts and feelings deplete your energy. Positive thoughts and feelings uplift your energy. You can physically feel a difference between the energy of a positive feeling and the energy of a negative feeling.

Let’s do an experiment. Think of someone you resent or someone who wronged you somehow in the past. Get the image in your mind and remember exactly what happened until you start to feel they way you did back then. Now pay attention to the energy inside of your body. What does it feel like? Doesn’t it feel heavy? Where do you feel it? In your stomach? Your Chest?

Now think of someone who has done something wonderful for you. Maybe someone who did something kind for you without you having to ask them. Again, get the image in your mind and remember exactly what happened until you feel the feeling again. Now pay attention to the energy in your body. Doesn’t that create a much lighter energy within your body?

Wayne Dyer talks about how this can be proven through muscle testing. A negative thought or feeling actually makes your body go weak and can be proven through muscle testing. Positive thoughts and feelings give you uplifting energy.

The Institute of HeartMath® has done a lot of research in this area. Through their research they have concluded that negative emotions such as frustration, anger or jealousy actually affect the heart rhythms in a negative way. Negative emotions make the heart rhythms show up on the monitor in a very chaotic un-coherent way. Positive emotions & feelings affect the heart rhythms in a positive way.

Essentially, negative emotions affect your immune system in a negative way. Negative emotions cause dis-ease in the body. In Louise Hay’s book “You Can Heal Your Life” she says that resentment, fear, guilt and criticism cause more problems in the body that anything else. Positive emotions and feelings on the other hand create health and well being. Quoting her in her book she says “I have found that forgiving and releasing resentment will dissolve even cancer.”

Doesn’t that make you want to take back your power and stop putting the responsibility for how you feel on people or things outside of your control.

Till next time!

Yes, I do notice that when I have become very ill it is usually after I have been very upset or saddened. Sometimes EFT helps.
