On this Human Rights Day, it is my hope that we will all act on our collective responsibility to uphold the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration. We can only honour the towering vision of that inspiring document when its principles are fully applied everywhere, for everyone."
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

We must work for the full implementation of human rights on the ground in a way that affects and improves the lives of the men, women and children who are all entitled, regardless of their race, sex, religion, nationality, property or birth, to realization of each and every right set forth in the Universal Declaratio.
High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem Pillay

Secretary-General urges immediate halt to renewed Israeli-Palestinian violence
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
27 December 2008 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday appealed for an immediate halt to the renewed violence in the Middle East, after Israeli air strikes – in response to ongoing rocket attacks by Palestinian militants – reportedly killed at least 150 people in Gaza.

“The Secretary-General is deeply alarmed by today''s heavy violence and bloodshed in Gaza, and the continuation of violence in southern Israel. He appeals for an immediate halt to all violence,” Mr. Ban''s spokesperson said in a statement issued today.

“While recognizing Israel''s security concerns regarding the continued firing of rockets from Gaza, he firmly reiterates Israel''s obligation to uphold international humanitarian and human rights law and condemns excessive use of force leading to the killing and injuring of civilians,” the statement said.

“He condemns the ongoing rocket attacks by Palestinian militants and is deeply distressed that repeated calls on Hamas for these attacks to end have gone unheeded,” it added.

In an effort to bring a swift end to the violence, Mr. Ban is making contact with regional and international leaders, including the other members of the diplomatic Quartet – the European Union, Russia and the United States – which backs the Road Map plan for a two-State solution to the conflict with Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security.

Just a few days ago, he called on Hamas, which recently declared that the ongoing calm between Gaza and southern Israel was now over, to ensure an immediate end to rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel and urged all parties to work urgently to ease humanitarian conditions in the Strip.

Today he reiterated the call for humanitarian supplies to be allowed into Gaza to aid the distressed population of 1.5 million Palestinians, who have been suffering due to shortages of food, medicine and fuel.

Some supplies did manage to get into Gaza yesterday, for the first time in almost ten days, after Israel opened a couple of the crossings which it had kept closed citing rocket and other attacks by militants from Gaza.

Thanks for the invite. Very interesting and intelligent comments below which don't beat around the bush, like war and terrorism. Many people seem to be thinking and saying similar things but everyone needs to know and understand these points of view and be able to discuss and debate their relative merits in an amicable and non-offensive manner. Afterall today's 'terrorists' may well be tomorrow's world diplomats, leaders and nobel peace prize winners. Hence we should all be very careful whom we criticise, insult and denigrate today. What goes around comes around.

How do i leave this group ? one thing is the email flooding. i don't need nearlly 200 emails a day. Plus the war of religions is becoming something this whole site set out not ot be. Leave the propoganda pictures out of it. When croshairs get put on civilians from any side it is terrorism. Double standards are rife withing geo plitics and it seems it's creeped it's nasty little head in here.

I red about particolary needs. Human Rights are for all, Palestinian and Israeli poeples. And everyone has the freedom to grow as he wont but not with the abuse of other. What is the best civilisation? I think we need to change the ask: all civilisation has some specially living thinks to share to the world, but is everyone of the world that with freedom takes or not takes without impositions.
I prefer to find what have in common peoples and persons to live with right relations.
But if a Governement bomb another Nation I believe is right for all the persons are thinking is not right, may protest with call, writes, manifestations, strickes, walking, presidiums, signatures, solidariety going to help in this Nation bombed tha poulations in his daily works and life in all what we can. I love doctors and teachers and engineers and artisans and artists going to other Nations or places who need help without money! Because they work for the Unity, all are human persons. They stop the separative and competitive (rich, poor, good bad, right wrong, etc.) coscience.

Please send announcements of actions you are joining or organizing (with date, time and location) to ijan@ijsn.net so they can be announced on our web site. Also send reports of actions you participate in so this information can be shared with people around the world.

Donate money through the Middle East Children's Alliance to pay for desperately needed medical supplies and their delivery. The current conditions in Gaza medical facilities are dire. The Middle East Children's Alliance is working with health organizations in Gaza to procure the most-needed medicines and send them direct to Gaza with the help of the Free Gaza Movement.
Flood Israeli embassies and consulates with letters and calls decrying the attacks. Find contact info for Israeli embassies around the world.

Contact government officials and call on them to act by denouncing the attacks and demanding an immediate cease-fire.
Shift the framing of Israel's actions in the media by phoning into a talk show or writing a letter to the editor.
Sign the petition in support of UN General Assembly President Father Miguel D'Escoto Brockmann who has spoken out to condemn Israeli "Apartheid" and call for boycott, divestment and sanctions.

Triste.
