An ideal for which I am prepared to die

Mandela made this statement from the dock at the opening of his trial on charges of sabotage, Supreme court of South Africa, Pretoria, April 20 1964

"I am the first accused. I hold a bachelor's degree in arts and practised as an attorney in Johannesburg for a number of years in partnership with Oliver Tambo. I am a convicted prisoner serving five years for leaving the country without a permit and for inciting people to go on strike at the end of May 1961.

At the outset, I want to say that..."

After years of chaos, a breath of hope in Somalia
Soldiers hold their children on her lap in a quarter of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia
The fighters Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TGF, its acronym in English) hold their children on her lap in a quarter of Mogadishu. For the first time in decades - including 20 years of dictatorship and 18 years of chaos that followed this period - the President of Somalia, Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, has popular support within the country and help from foreign nations
After two decades of civil war, virtually no pollution, as almost all the country's industry was devastated. A breeze comes clean ocean and shakes the bougainvillea
Mother Africa a breath of hope is shaken to its people

Aftermath of ... "Skin" ... the Sandra Laing story ... A Review ...

I saw the emotive movie "Skin" last night 4/17/09 (part of Filmfest DC) full of misconstrued love and misguided angst - which really took me home in a BIG way ... sigh ...

The setting is of a very conservative Boere couple/family who gave birth to an almost black child and the trials and tribulations they faced - no to mention what was imparted onto Sandra - her struggle and how her life was being determined by ridiculous laws governing one’s birthright and acceptance of being "classified" as “white” South African citizens – or being denied citizenship – the right to vote or have a say in one’s dispensation - all under the guise of Christianity ...

Being eau fait with the story - as it unfolded in the sensationalist tabloids back home (circa: 1965 - 1984) and seeing the rest of Sandra's troubled life being played out on the silver screen - albeit 12,000 km across the world from the Eastern Transvaal - the unnecessary conflicts her unenlightened openly racist family helped cause - jolted me back to just how messed-up my country and how stupid the draconian laws defying the simplicity of that which is - should be regarded and accepted as purely human in nature can be wrenched apart … torn asunder..

The UN International Day of Peace on 21 September every year is not only about creating peace between nations, it’s about non-violence in our homes, communities and schools. Therefore Peace Day is relevant to every human being on the planet.
Now the next major objective is to introduce 3 billion people to Peace Day by 2012. To do it, we need the help of all people regardless of age, race, nationality, religion or gender; people who are willing to stand up for peace.
Mission
Peace One Day looks to engage all sectors of society, including governments, organisations of the United Nations system, regional and non-governmental organisations and individuals in observance of 21 September, through the practical manifestation of non-violence and ceasefire in accordance with UN GA Resolution 55/282, and encourage action on Peace Day that creates a united and sustainable world.
