MERRY CHRISTMAS

From the Celts we have the ancient tradition of “I am” poetry. These poems were never intended as mere ego inflations, but more of establishing identity-connections, of relationships. In line with this tradition, today I have written:

THE WIND OF ANDREA BOCELLI

I am as sweet as the wind of Andrea Bocelli
I am as deep as the bottomless miracle of Shakespeare
as solid with sublime beauty as stones of Michelangelo
as full as the Tao of Beethoven with power to wed
the symphonic stars of heaven with choral trees of earth

I am as small as the mustard seed of Jesus
a parable containing the complexity of Bach
as humble as the bird-prayers of Saint Francis
as holy as the dancing laughter of wise and wandering Baal Shem Tov
I am as righteous with visions as prophets Isaiah, Black Elk and Einstein
as big with mandala-dreaming as Blake and Jung

I am animal, angel and human
and I am as sweet
as the wind
of Andrea Bocelli.

Now make an “I am” poem of your own and celebrate the creative accomplishments of our shared humanity!

GATHERING OF SHARDS

Compassion is the root and common thread. Compassion abides in the soul, as soul’s most natural offspring. It works through the heart and enters the world without doctrine or dogma. Compassion suffers for otherness, from that which one did not do. And compassion rejoices with the joy of that which is shared by all.

The differences of religions arise when compassion is broken apart, like a mirror dashed in a fit of anger. But the way of compassion is wholeness. And the cause of compassion is unity.

We need not abandon the differences, for they smell of human journeys and the gardens of many imaginations. But we must always remember compassion and the invitation to the banquet of reunion. For the “religious” purpose of compassion is to gather the shards of darkened glass and render them harmless.

Some might call this a miracle, other enlightenment. I am a humble person and I call it only Eden, the place of the Tree of Life.

DRESSED FOR THE OCCASION

Not everyone comes wearing
a red dress.
Many are content with
white shirts, plaid skirts, blue jeans.
The wounded are wearing
overcoats,
because for them
the world is prematurely cold.
The silly and the cleverest
are dressed as clowns.
And the angels are
naked, between the eyelashes
of our setting sun.

Not everyone comes wearing
the reminder of black,
although pain is everywhere
and loss attends us.
Those who are painted in blood
have wept in the wasting of war.
And those who are
painted with light
are here to heal us.

Friend,
even if I came to you
in the rags of weariness,
the cloak of invisibility or
dust of neglect, the
web of a spider,
would you offer me a drink of water
seeing thirst,
and help to decide
a way, at the crossroads of life?
If I look into your
hands, what will I find:
a golden thread,
the strength of beauty,
a loaf of bread?

NATIVE SENSES

The expression
of the beautiful genius
opens like a wordless
rose
and clothes us
in the fumes
of paradise.
Somehow
when we are
listening to the wings
of crows and the
tender melodies
of elfin butterflies
we feel embraced
by the breath
of angels.
Beating
so softly, so
delicate-sweet that
velvet on a virgin’s
skin
might touch us
with an offering.
Though
we are there, out
in that other place
the familiar cup
of a summer’s rose
rises
from this ground
to kiss us
with the miracle
of its pouring passions.
And
we are downed
supine
into the common
haunting symbolum
of earth’s
dense mystery.
Though
not a single
word has swollen
to the lips
like a cherry
freshly swollen,
but the heavy
buzzing
of a working bee
lost
in the ecstasies
of pollen.
And
we are spellbound
and complete.
Like fruit.
Like garden.

ANSWERS *

You are the Enemy. We have hated, killed and died: our bodies muscled into postures of aggression, our minds imprisoned in incessant terror. We have engaged in slaughter across flaming deserts, in frozen wastelands; mutual destroyers, in burned out cities of smoldering rubble, in lifetimes of bloodshed, in eons of ashes.

Today I throw away my weapons. The systems are being dismantled; the machinery of madness is wrenched asunder. Are you hungry, my enemy? Here is food, my friend. Do you need shelter? Let us build together. How are you parents, your white haired elders? I can give medicine. What of your children, do they need education? We can teach stories; paint rainbow bridges of alternative directions; hand them a future free from the fears of our past, free from false answers.

Let us share this hour: speak quietly to one another, give the gift of unveiled glances; listen to heartbeats, raindrops of wonderment, mortal respiration. After so much terror, communion, communion like this; like softness of a kiss, like bread freshly baked and the simplicity of water; is refreshing, liberating our tortured, maimed and bloodied souls.

Most important of all—my enemy, my new friend—here is my hand, both hands, clean of propaganda, empty of deception, warmly open. More important than that—this is my face, my face without mask, my eyes to look into. I want… my Enemy, my Friend… I need to trust you, for you now, before it is too late, before it is later than the darkness, also, as well and equally, to trust me—to meet me on common ground. Outside of the cancer wards of power and back rooms of genocide and the cold crimes of hatred.

Let us now—now, which is always where we are—let us stop gnawing on the bitter roots of envy and vengeance. Let us stop feeding our innards on the poison fruits of the tree of Cain. But rather, let us answer for one another and say, “I give in peace and receive in peace. And war no more.”
