dear Stromek hello,

Thanks for creating this group with such an inspired title!

as to the depression and anxiety you write about, my question is first to know wether you authentically feel compassion & acceptance for yourself while you are in that state?
As to me, i'm also in the Dharma but since i'm not yet a fully realised Buddha, my practice didn't prevent me from doubting a lot & going through extremely dark times, a real torture from within, which lasted several years.
What i've learned with this painful experience is that we do add to our pain when we resist to our pain.We do add to our pain when we nourish a low self-esteem,judging ourselves, rejecting ourselves, rejecting our weakness. So, i don't know if you'll find this a useful key, but you might try already to open to what you deeply feel about yourself, what kind of thoughts arises within your mind when you see yourself going through depression & anxiety. It sounds simple, but it's actually a real challenge to undergo such an authentic encounter with one's own full suffering, with all that it might include : feelings of shame, unworthiness,anger,sadness,despair,loneliness....
Meditation, that way, could offer you a path to find your own answers, at your own rythm & in the respect of who you are. As you say, peace begins with compassion, but where does compassion start? With oneself.
Then, if you feel like you need a therapeutic help, it's important to listen to this need, to respect it, and to look for a therapist that :

1) makes you feel secure, respected and understood
2) has the proper skills (methods & experience) to offer you the help that you need.

To conclude this message, i'll just complete it with the beautiful idea of Stan GROF who says that whatever the hardness of what you're going through, it's always a process of liberation.

Trust this process, that already will bring back some peace within your heart.

PUT A LITTLE LOVE IN YOUR HEART
Music and words-Jimmy Holiday, Randy Meyers and Jackie DeShannon, 1969.

Think of your fellow man
Lend him a helping hand
Put a little love in your heart
You see it's getting late
Oh please don't hesitate
Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
And the world will be a better place
For you and me
You just wait and see
Another day goes by
And still the children cry
Put a little love in you heart
If you want the world to know
We won't let hatred grow
Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
And the world will be a better place
For you and me
You just wait and see
Wait and see
Take a good look around
And if you're lookin' down
Put a little love in your heart
I hope when you decide
Kindness will be your guide
Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
And the world will be a better place
For you and me
You just wait and see
Put a little love in your heart
Put a little love in your heart
Put a little love in your heart
Put a little love in your heart
Put a little love in -
Put a little love in your heart...

Michael John, thank you so much for reminding us of Tonglen. My girlfriend in our Sangha uses it to great advantage - she says it helps pacify all the negative stuff that comes up for her -- (She lives in NYC, so it is a challenge, sometimes!)

I have a question, though, as I am struggling with depression and anxiety. How do you work through to a place where you can transform other people's negativity and send out what is good from inside you? It is often hard to find that goodness, hard to just rely on the knowledge that we are all born with Buddha-nature.

Any help you can give me on this would be appreciated!

What do our members think of the presence of advertisement, however beautiful, on this site? Do you agree with it's message? Does that message relate to our group's direction -- Peace begins with Compassion. I, for one, do not see a connection with Compassion on the Ananda message, although it is very beautiful.

A gentle heart has power beyond our imagination.
It is also infectious.
Thank you for starting such a group.

Compassion can only be shared when we have a full and complete understanding of suffering. To truly give to another person we must first know the path that will enrich the other's searching.

Rati has expressed, in a most beautiful way, the words I send out on all of my personal emails. Indeed. It bears repeating:

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.
If you want to be happy, practice compassion.
