PEACE ONE DAY
Comment by Clicia Pavan on September 17, 2009 at 2:51pm

Tagged with: peace one day, dream Ten years ago, I had an idea; I dared to dream that I could galvanise the countries of the world to recognise an official day of ceasefire of non-violence. Mad? Ambitious? Idealistic? All of the above. Many years and a lot of hard work later, I am starting to feel that we are really getting somewhere; every year, on September 21st, people from all over the globe, people of all ages, races, sexes and faiths, are commemorating Peace Day any which way they can.
But what is our ultimate aim? What is the purpose of the films, the music, the sport, the website, the education resources? In the end, these are all simply tools; tools with which I hope to institutionalise Peace Day. Every year, on Mother’s Day, I take my mother flowers. It is something that makes both of us happy. I don’t have a clue who created Mother’s Day and, to be honest, I don’t give a damn. It exists. That’s all I know. And that’s all I want for Peace Day.
When Peace Day becomes something self-sustaining, an institutionalised day of global non-violence, I will be a happy man. My job will be done and my organisation, Peace One Day, will cease to exist. That day will be a day to celebrate because it will mean that POD is no longer needed, that the battle has been won.

I wonder how long it will take? Ideas on a postcard, please.

But, in the meantime, ask yourself how long it is going to take for you to make Peace Day a fixed date in your annual diary? Is peace important enough to you? If it is, please make it work. If you always observe it, so will your children. Go on. Pass it on.
In Peace,
Jeremy

My husband, David and I, will be in Kansas City performing our readers' theater play: Thomas Merton and Dorothy Day: Pilgrims and Prophets of Peace. For more information go to www.inscapeministries.com and click on Pilgrims and Prophets. You can also click on Events to find places and times or on contact us. We will be at St. Patrick's Parish on Friday evening, September 18; at St. James Parish on Sunday evening, September 20, and at St. Thomas More Parish on Monday, September 21. We hope and pray that on this International Day of Peace that more and more people will have an awareness of what needs to be done so that there can be less violence and more peace in our world.
