Could someone please define "disciplined civilian intervention?" I mean, is it about Ghandi-esque non-violent responses to injustices or something else?

Thanks,

Nash

Many of us have already been involved in discplined civilian intervention to either facilitate short opportunities for peace through local Truce mechanisms or by simply stepping in and managing outbreaks of peace safe and endurable.... methods used are Ghandi (Daniel O'Connell 19th century ireland) influenced but we do not propose to lie down under tanks ever (its not safe!) - disciplined civilian intervention puts safety at the top of the list ..... we have found that our ways are based more on the power of a steady pro-active presence - linking the world to the situation through the power of the lense the microphone, communications and internet .... removing impunity from the bully and giving the "reasonable" person a safe arena to breathe, rethink and feel encouraged .... as the "mouse ate the elephant ..." -- We in Ireland (after 800 years of conflict) have learned that only civilians can achieve peace - violence can be stopped by armed soldiers with blue helmets but only stopped untill they leave (sometimes not even that long - my father RIP was a Blue berret general from Ireland)) .... it is the people in the situation, who have decided that it is peace that is needed, that we need to help, encourage, make safe, and create a PeaceZone to give peace a chance for them (under their light) through "disciplined civilian intervention" (PeaceZone) ... I hope this helps explain a little ... Dudley Stewart, Former UNICEF Regional Project Director East Africa - now at home in Ireland

How is your day?

Well - long winded is needed sometimes - but Peace Zone I think is about bringing more than safety back to a wartorn place - isn't it a bit like inviting people back up out of the defensive bunkers to "smell the roses" get a a feeling of real life again. The first Peace Zone was in Tullamore - we had loads of bellydancing and african drummers and irish dancers but we had our protectors also - the quiet minders, the stewards, and all went well. Even in supposedly peaceful places there are bullies and thugs who will try to interfere or impose THEIR way - the Stewards kept that element quietly away and under the ever vigilant memory stick of a digital camera ..... in many ways music is the motivation for having a Peace Zone - its an international language and an age-old language of Peace - I'm for yez all the way xx Bonnie
Your response was perfect - I needed a perspective, a beginning, and I'm grateful that you took the time to do that. I like what you said including the 800 year lesson. It seems that both the goal of a peace zone and the means are in alignment with my thinking - in the sense that visibility and/or exposure are outstanding tools for catalyzing self-reflection and new perceptions.

My day is unfolding to unusually cool temperatures for Las Vegas - but it will warm up soon enough :-)

Best,

Hi Nash - hi all
I look forward to sharing more of our mutual experience in this forum. None f my colleagues are really using iPeace as a forum yet - but it is better to take on ew views and challenges. We are building something here.

There are 100,000 armed peacekeepers out there - none were near me in the field when serious violence broke out - they simply can't be everywhere. I was a soldier (a yound 17 old corporal who did Peace Duty on he border in ireland in 1969 - 1970 - i witnessed british troops speeding around in armoured landrovers pointing gunds at everyone - things went from bad to worse for them --- the irish soldiers were so badly equipped with had to hide most of the time - things got more peaceful around us.

If we put 200,000 blue berets out there it won't solve the problem. We need to watch out for the opportnunities for peace, ceasefire, truce - this will come from local communities and commanders in war zones - we need to send people (trained people) out to them to pin down a cease fire and terms for entry of disciplined civilian peacekeeper (bolstered in numbers with disciplined trainees) - we need to baby sit belligerents through the difficult times of patience needed to keep lives safe during the peace fire ---- but at the centre of it all put a little festival. promote fun - smell the roses and have relief organisations set out there stalls bazaar fashion ...... we did it before -- we need to gear to multiply such actions. WE need to build to having thousands of trained people in reserve (with official uniforms and ID's) ready to go into the field in disciplined formations when needed...... this is the type of World change we need to achieve.......
