Story behind the Camapaign
Shannon Kootstachin, 13 year old student started the whole campaign for the school in Attawapiskat, Ontario, Canada.
She wants her younger brothers and sisters to have a better school than portables she received her schooling in.
Shannon Kootstachin replied; "I don't want others to go to school in portables that leak, windows don't open, washroom doors dont close, and ceilings are cracked. This is not an atmosphere for learning."
The concerns are health and safety of the students.
Other parts of Ontario is taken for granted that schools are safe and healthy.
External educational experts from Ontario have indicated that the present facilities are NOT suitable for quality eduacation.
Not every building that is judged to be satisficatory from a health and safety criteria, is suitable as a school.
The government prepared to invest $350 million in post secondary educational support, but will not build a school for 400+ students who are receiving what education they can facilities that represent only 50% of space required by governments own alone those of Ontario.
At Attawapiskat school, 70% of the students don't make it to grade 8, because of the way the learning facilities are and only 30% of the students make it to high school.
Other Facts:
Ontario public school boards association has cited aboriginal learning as a top priority and launched a number of initiatives to try to close the learning gap between native and non-native children.
