To encourage the use of dialogue as a resolution to conflict. To make the world safe and hospitable for the future generations.
I was very fortunate to stay with the core members of the International team in New Zealand. They arrived tired at Kawai Purapura in Auckland, on the 26th September. Then after a short Maori concert with singing by young Maori children it was time for dinner and bed. 9 of them, including Rafael de la Rubia, the organiser of the March, didn't arrive until around midnight. Next morning up by 7, breakfast and over to join the Auckland Peace March at 9.30am. Then at midday we all got into the 2 mini vans for a long trip to Wellington. After some whirlwind sightseeing and van problems we finally arrived at our lodgings at the Tapu Te Ranga Marae. The next days were extremely busy attending engagements, the mayors reception, many speeches and the office work: organising media coverage, sending info overseas etc. There was little time for sleep. No time to catch up with jet lag. At the office on Friday night Rafael with a smile said only 12 more hours. Although all were tired, the excitement of the World March beginning, let the adrenalin flow and with a new vigor and much joy we watched as Rafael officially launched the World March for Peace and Non Violence.
Then we were off up the street with many people and children enthusiastically joining in. What a magnificient day! The official launch on Gandhi's birthday, in front of his statue, at Wellington Central Railway Station in my home country of New Zealand. What an honour!
I would like to hear nominations for an anthem for the Peace Movement... and for The World March.
I want to nominate the following:

"This Is My Song"
Music written in 1899-1900 by Jean Sibelius
Lyrics written in 1934 by Lloyd Stone. The 3rd verse was added by Georgia Harkness

This is my song, O God of all the nations
A song of peace for lands afar and mine
This is my home, the country where my heart is
Here are my hopes and dreams, my holy shrine
Music written in 1899-1900 by Jean Sibelius
Lyrics written in 1934 by Lloyd Stone. The 3rd verse was added by Georgia Harkness

This is my song, O God of all the nations
A song of peace for lands afar and mine
This is my home, the country where my heart is
Here are my hopes and dreams, my holy shrine
But other hearts in other lands are beating
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.

My country's skies are bluer than the ocean
And sunlight beams on clover leaf and pine
But other lands have sunlight, too, and clover
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine
O hear my song, thou God of all the nations
A song of peace for their land and for mine.

May truth and freedom come to every nation;
May peace abound where strife has raged so long;
That each may seek to love and build together,
A world united, righting every wrong;
A world united in its love for freedom,
Proclaiming peace together in one song.

This is a beautiful song which reaches across boundaries and petty patriotism to speak of the love that everyone should feel for their own land... and therefore of the whole World. If we had grown up singing this instead of the belligerent and jingoistic national anthems that we're all used to, perhaps this World would be a better place.

Here is a version (only of the original first 2 verses) being practiced by Indigo Girls and Missy Higgins:
Comment by Diogo Cortez: "I am working for World March in Lisbon, Portugal, and I'm looking for good ideas to make it better... and more people to come in our still small group."

Dear Diogo (and Others):
The reason I have started this discussion is not for me to give you all the answers, but to form one spot where people can leave behind their suggestions, a place where ALL of us can come to look for ideas and inspiration.

However, I will start it off by giving a few ideas of my own:

1) First, remember that The March has already started! Thousands of people all over the World have already organised activities in the name of The March. And people who didn't know anything about it before have started to talk about it.

2) Keep in mind that you can organise a March activity anywhere in the World. It doesn't have to be a city - or even a country - that the official international group (the ones who will set off from Wellington, New Zealand on the 2nd of October) will be visiting. The March is not about them... it's about ALL of us. And it's about Peace. (If it were only about a group of 40 to 60 people travelling around the World, I personally wouldn't be putting my energy into it.) In fact, my favourite action (of the ones I've seen on YouTube or read about) was in Ireland, a country they won't be visiting:
A simple idea, and one that I would like to see repeated all over the World. It involves people who have come especially to help out, and also people who just happen to be passing by and want to say: "I care about Peace, too!"... And it involves children. (VERY important!)
3) I would suggest that you visit the official March web-site (information in 27 languages) and download the official logo in your language. You can see above examples in Portuguese, Chinese, and Catalan. You can also amend the logo to be bi-lingual - like the Irish one in English and Gaelic seen in the video above. Then paint it on a large sheet and display the sheet at all your actions. This way, passers-by will start to think: "Hey! I've seen that sign before. I wonder what it's about?" Some will come up to you and ask about it... and you have a wonderful opportunity to talk to them about Peace.

4) Whenever you're going to prepare an activity, announce it in advance - in the local press, on the local radio (television too, if possible), as well as sending a message about your plans to the web-site mentioned above. They can decide whether your activity is too small to announce... but if YOU decide that it's too unimportant to announce, how are people going to learn about it???

5) And this brings me to an important point: BE PROUD of your action... and be proud of yourself for doing it. If you're going to play modest, how many people do you think are going to show up? No, call your local (alternative?) radio station and tell them that 2 of you are willing to come into the studio to talk about a GREAT action that is being organised for Peace. This is a LOT more effective than giving them the information and letting them announce it in 4 seconds.

6) Make sure that your action is FUN! This is going to get people talking a lot more about Peace than if you hold a couple of very dry lectures on the subject. Give them information, sure! But don't BORE them with Peace...

7) Personally, I think that it would be a good idea if you held an action in the same place on a regular basis: e.g. every Saturday morning in the park or every third Wednesday in the month, an evening in front of the town hall. Make sure that you pace yourselves. If you try to do an action too often for your energy level, you will get worn down and burnt out. But a regular repeat should generate its own dynamic, getting larger and more visible as time goes on.

Well, those are a few of my general ideas on the subject. Any more ideas (both general and ideas for specific actions)? Let's be aware of our rights but of our responsibilities too and above alltag:ipeace.us,2009-04-01:2217368:Topic:14340752009-04-01T20:20:02.439Zjimmsfairytales0comhttps://ipeace.us/profile/jimmsfairytales0com
