When it comes to peace, how would you describe yourself?
I'm just a peaceful person
What do you believe are the 'burning issues' today?
War, Hunger, Poverty, Education, Violence
So what is it?
One is left with the horrible feeling now that war settles nothing; that to win a war is as disastrous as to lose one. ~~ Agatha Christie
What must we overcome to achieve peace?
Too many people--worldwide and throughout time--have been convinced that theirs is/was the ONLY right way to think/act/behave/believe. Because theirs is/was the only right way their higher power has offered them special dispensation to kill and maim others to further and to prove that rightness.

I am afraid that until we all allow others the space and peace to believe what they will, to worship in a way that does no harm to anyone else but still brings comfort to the individual seeker, there will be violence done between peoples.

Unfortunately, all of recorded human history bears out the fear that religion begets violence. All too often, the world over, it's been a matter of power in the guise of religion.

Every single one of us alive today is descended from people--somewhere, sometime--who, bloodied and roaring with triumph, climbed to the top of a of a pile of fallen bodies. We are here because those before us were warriors, conquering heroes and unbeaten champions. We are their get.

And it is only through them, our violent forbears, that we alive today have the exquisite luxury of equanimity and quietude. Due to the violent excesses of their lives, today some of us enjoy comfortable lives far from the gory of those early years. We’ve discovered and put words to a yearning aspiration for a nonviolent human path from here on out—for everyone.

We want to human history to do a 90 degree turn away from the violence of brother against brother, religion against religion, country against country. We ache to help those who are still lost in the hell of generations of people, of long lines of individual lives, lost amid the harsh red glare of violence. We imagine a world wherein all people are free to follow the paths their individual emotional, spiritual and intellectual needs guide them toward.

It is good that we should want lives of joy, free from fear and anguish, for everyone, everywhere. Intolerance, ignorance and casually horrific violence still rule the lives of so many of the world's people in so many places. So many still live short lives filled with horrifying brutishness and misery. All steps by people like us, here, at this place—even tiny steps, even just thoughts sent to those who might not ever hear them--work toward easing ingrained, institutionalized brutality and are always an overall positive.

And so we continue on, baby step by baby step, toward a time when all can live with the choices we have, when all have the basics we take for granted, when everyone can read and write and contribute to the sum total of human thought and achievement. But we should be ever mindful of where and from whom we are descended.

After all, as George Santayana said so eloquently, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
Can we change the world?
