When it comes to peace, how would you describe yourself?
I am a pacifist
What do you believe are the 'burning issues' today?
War, Hunger, Poverty, Education, Our Planet, Violence, Human Rights, Other
So what is it?
intolerance, greed, an inability to see the beauty in others and to love across the lines of our difference
What must we overcome to achieve peace?
I believe our spiritualities are a force for peace, our capacities for love, compassion, justice, and the sense of our common bond.
Can we change the world?
More about me
I am an artist and a student of biology, sociology, religion, ethics, peacebuilding, development, and conflict transformation.
Growing up in Israel/Palestine left a deep impression on me. My friendships across the lines and meeting my wife who grew up in Gaza, have been both beautiful and painful experiences - to feel what has connected and divided the people we've known. As I've come to understand the Palestinian experience I feel a deepening sadness at the injustices perpetuated by those who see only their own victimization. It is not only Jews who have been victims of history, Palestinians have become victims as well. We must come to see our mirror images in each other, and find the capacities for compassion, and the courage to risk showing it for peace.. otherwise we will live in endless cycles of violence, mistrust, and fear.

Thank you for your kind words of appreciation.
Reading your text makes me ponder about the glorifications of victimhood.
Is there any reward, any compensation ?? I have spent a good part of my life believing I am some sort of victim too. In that 'role' it is hard to find any compassion. Too busy with self-pity and blame. Only once I stepped out of this 'play' and started seeing myself on this larger karmic soul-journey am I starting to see my self in the other. Have I stopped judging. Here compassion starts. Here my own inner peace starts.
Thank you David for your wise words. My post here perhaps was a bit 'out of context'...but yes expressed what I feel...
I have had a very nice life and have been interested in the afterlife, God, meaning of life during all my life. Two years ago we had a great loss in our family, then I have get in contact with lot of people that are overcome with grief...I began searching for real evidences of this afterlife...My thoughts were those that I talk with you before...If there is a spiritual world, it may have some manifestations in this reality...
There is when I realized how difficult was to talk about this...and how many real experiences are kept in silence, like a secret, couldn't believe how many extraordinary experiences people have, and that this is not known in an open way...I thought that knowing all this would be a great help for all people that are suffering, lost loved members, or are close to death...or simply are trying to find meaning for their lives...
I observed that some of the 'faith people' in extreme life situations, are not contained by their faith...they have a tendency to feel that 'God has abandoned them'...and there is a large number that begin to question the existence of a kind God.
Here is where I found those rigid beliefs that I was talking...In one side, those who really 'know', not only because they have learned this as their faith, but because they have had a real connection with 'the other world'...(true faith, mystical experiences, nde, healing experiences, and several manifestations that are so wonderful to hear)...When I asked them why they don't share this in a more open way, I found that they have a tendency to keep this for themselves, the answer is usually "you have to look inside yourself, each one has to find it" ...I understand what they are saying and find that yes it's true...and also believe that one thing don't go against the other...if they share all this, they would bring a lot of hope, so each one can begin their road with Hope of finding something...
In the other hand, I saw that those that believe that all ends with death, have a tendency to believe that there are no manifestations at all...that all may be 'lies' or imagination, or 'crazy things'...and have a tendency to stay in that position without searching because they don't have any hope of finding something...
I imagine that it would be great to make a 'bridge' between them...(perhaps a 'naive' dream!)...
I began sharing information that I found interesting (most of it in Spanish), talking in an open way of all this...and it was a so nice experience to see how people feel comforted to express their feelings...share their personal experiences (One thing that surprised me was how difficult was for the people to talk in an open way of this themes...how much fear of sharing...I can't understand well why...They usually say "you are going to think I'm crazy..." and in some cases I have observed that they also doubt of their 'sanity' when they experience something...or they experience some kind of 'negation' of their own experience...) I believe that there is a lack of information too...Seems to be a 'faith or not faith' theme...like that all is an 'unsolvable mystery" that can only be accessed by faith...I feel that as we were saying, yes it's a mystery, but we can perceive, find, some pieces of the puzzle and get a glimpse of the greater image...
Well, forgive me for the so long post...Be well, Abelia
David, I liked your words: "there is much we cannot know for sure, so much we must surmise as best we can from the world as we perceive it."
I believe it's difficult from our 'modest'(humble?) human perspective to get to know how this works, how this Is....for me yes it's possible to 'perceive' some effects of this spiritual world in our daily life...I see that there are people that had real experiences (NDE, OBE, mistical experiences, saw apparitions, telepathy, premonitory or coincident dreams, etc) I found in my society that most of these experiences are kept like a 'secret'...like things 'we don't have to talk, because they are going to think we are crazy'...I found that these experiences can bring much Hope, open our heart to 'believe in a spiritual world'...(to those that don't have much spontaneous faith)
I would like to know what are your thoughts about one brief post I wrote in a group...It's part of a conversation about Fear of Death and searching for 'proof'
...it's in i-peace in:
Be well, Abelia
David, I send the message again (is the same than below) but some part of the text was missing...
"My thoughts are that we are created "in the image" of this Spirit to some extent, as morally cognizant creatures"
I really don't know...I don't feel someone 'make us'...I tend to believe that we are part of this Spirit...that we are the Spirit (all, connected, and at the same time different individuals...souls...creating, evolving)
"... the possibility for good and evil is the "price" of a moral order"
Perhaps good and evil are things that we have to experience just to learn? to 'feel'...to evolve our consciousness?...In a 'perfect' world perhaps we don't have the possibility to experience pain, suffering, situations that may make us grow in conscience...
"I imagine that a God of love cries too, as we do, in the face of such evil. "
Not sure...Imagining...I imagine that in a greater view, a higher view of our reality...(that may include the 'other layers of the onion') all this life, world, may be is just a 'play'...like when you see a rollercoaster and say 'let's take a ride'...and we come into this life to experience good and evil...I imagine God-Source-other Spirits...may be watching us with a smile...like when we watch kids crying because they want a sweet...and we know it something that has no importance...and for the kid is a tragedy...(just imagining!)
We usually go once a year to the States and have friends in Virginia, if we go there to visit them I will let you know...If you come to Argentina just let me know too...Kind regards, Abelia
David, I come again because I have just visited your web-site...Your Art is really Wonderful!...My most sincere congratulations (we have been in Virginia two or three times, we have been 'floating' in the Shenandoah...)
Kind regards, Abelia
Hi David, I ask myself the same questions ;-) ...I have been raised with a Catholic mother and Atheist father (very open minded)...Source: I can't feel God as a 'human being' (with human characteristics...like caring, loving, judging, etc)...Many years of my life I thought there wasn't any God at all...(couldn't understand how that kind of God could exist with all the horror that is here on earth for some people, for some animals...planet...ill children, abused, death...wars) I tried to understand what were my feelings...I know Life is real...strong...nature...I lived my sprituality most through contact with nature...
Now I believe that the Source may be ALL...life, us, all...this reality we see, and perhaps simultaneous realities that are working at the same time...evolving... not fixed... with One mind for all...like Jung's collective conscioussness... connected...
One image that I liked a lot about the reality , was one that I read in Carlos Castaneda's book "The Art of dreaming"...I'll copy it below...Kind regards, Abelia
"You definitely went into another layer of the onion", Don Juan (the wise man) said, finishing a statement to which I had not paid attention.
"What is this other layer of the onion, Don Juan?
"The world is like an onion, it has many skins. The world we know is but one of them. Sometimes, we cross boundaries and enter into another skin: another world, very much like this one, but not the same. And you entered into one, all by yourself" (in a dream he had)
"How is this journey you're talking about possible, don Juan?
"That is meaningless question, because no one can answer it. In the view of sorcerers, the universe is constructed in layers, which the energy body can cross. Do you know where the old sorcerers are still existing to this day? In another layer, in another skin of the onion."
David, I agree completely with your view.
Alzheimer: I like the idea that our brain-mind is like a radio...the soul-source in us is independant of it...('outside' may be is not the exact word...perhaps in another vibration from the material world), the brain may be damaged...and is not able to process the signal, but is still there...intact...we may have the 'radio' at home damaged...but the source of where the music, the talk comes, is still playing, althought we can't sintonize it...or perceive it...I have come to believe that in these cases...the spirit is as present as the spirit of those who have passed...just in another way...perhaps he is not able with his actual body to express himself or his memories...but his 'soul-source' is there for me... (I send you a picture of the two options I imagine...source from 'inside' the radio-radio breaks, all ends- and soul from a higher source, I believe in the last one)...I feel that in these cases we can try to make contact with them through dreams, meditations...not through our five senses brain-to-brain usual communication...Be well, Abelia
David, Thanks for joining Many Faiths - One Goal.
Please feel free to post peace quotations and start discussions. (very deep and thoughtful blog by the way) Even though our little group is growing, there is not a lot of activity - yet. God willing, this will change very soon.
David, Your words resonate a lot with my thoughts: " I'm not sure whether it is a matter of re-entering existence, or a deep spiritual interconnection with each other, which for some of us who are so attuned may give us that impression?"...
I'm also not sure how this works (reincarnation or interconnection)...I don't mind very much if we have lived before or not (or who we were)... I find really exciting this children's experiences because they show that there is 'something' happening...some connection with a spiritual source (ourselves in other life, collective consciousness, some kind of telepathy ?)...any option for me may give some evidence that there is something in us that trascends our body...that may survive death...
Also this can be interesting to watch around ourselves...if this is working like this (in these extreme cases)...it may be working in our own lives...
Kind regards, Abelia
Regardless of what some on the political right may say, when it comes to Israel, American Jews:
* Support President Obama's Middle East agenda,
* Want strong US leadership to bring about a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and,
* Understand that difficult compromises will have to made by both sides in order to achieve lasting peace and security in the region.
Here are a few more interesting tidbits from the poll:
AMY GOODMAN: President Obama, speaking at the State Department yesterday. A Hamas spokesperson told Al Jazeera television Obama’s position toward the Palestinians doesn’t represent a change. Osama Hamdan said, “I think this is an unfortunate start for President Obama in the region and the Middle East issue. And it looks like the next four years, if it continues with the same tone, will be a total failure.”
Well, for more on this, we are joined by Noam Chomsky, professor of… Continue
I am fascinated by the power in our human spirituality for peace as we recognize the common moral and spiritual ground that exists in our respective faith traditions and teachings. We are, as human beings, bound together by an innate "need" to understand the meaning of our existence. I believe this was by design of our "Creator." In this quest we are thrust together into discourse, and we are interdependent. Furthermore it orients us toward a common goal. Coming from a Christian peace… Continue
