War, Hunger, Poverty, Education, Our Planet, Violence, Inflation, Human Rights, Our Shrinking Freedom
What must we overcome to achieve peace?
Fear
More
I feel no single item is an obstacle to peace. All the options that are mentioned above are contributors to preventing peace. Fear, to me, encompasses all of the other items listed. I do not seek peace per se, but live by a simple equation, which is--Understanding + Acceptance = Peace.
Can we change the world?
Definitely
More about me
I am a European immigrant who arrived in Phoenix, Arizona, in October 1956 at the tender age of 13. My early years in my new country were far from pleasant as I experienced years of predjudice from both members of my extended family and fellow white people who were American citizens, which I was not. This experience while unbearable at times has made my innate compassion stronger. As a child, I always interfered when I saw injustice, ignoring the danger in which it might put me. Once I became a parent, the safety and well-being of my children came first. Yet, at times when they were not with me, I would find myself getting in the midst of an ongoing injustice only to realize that my impulsiveness could have gotten me serious injuries or even death. But, that lesson I have not learned as yet.
Today, I am surrounded by convicted felons every weekday as I teach them basic reading, math, language, and writing. Here injustice reigns supreme as I look at my students whose ages range from a mere 16 to over 60, and whose capabilities range from the non-reader to those who perform up to the sixth grade level. What pains me the most is that of my 30 students, I may encounter one or at the most two men who are not African Americans. Nevermind the stories they tell me.
