Iran Day 3

Posted on November 24, 2008 at 11:30pm 0 Comments

Medea and I (CODEPINK co-founders) are spending the week in Iran on a citizen’s diplomacy visit, engaging with Iranian women’s groups and officials to build bridges and create peace from the ground up. We arrived Friday. Here’s a bit of our experience Monday (bit of time delay in getting this up…sorry!)

It is our third day in Iran and we feel like we’ve been here a month. We are all a bit bleary eyed, with too little sleep. Poor Ann Wright has been hit with the flu, but she doesn’t miss a… Continue

Iran Day 2

The James Carville of Iran

Yesterday was our “Government Meeting” day. When we first asked to meet with people in the government, I don’t think we truly understood that it was that big of an ask. It just doesn’t happen. When we asked the two women members of Parliament if they’d met any other people from the US, they both answered that they’d met no one—and one of the women had been in office for eight years. (Read more about them in Medea’s blog). As we left the meeting—which resembled a… Continue

We arrived Friday. Here’s a bit of our experience Saturday (bit of time delay in getting this up…sorry!)

We are just back from a fantastic day. Memories of our first days in Iraq almost six years ago strike us as we walk the streets. Medea and I share a tiny room with twin beds, also similar… Continue

I think your reference to disresepect is the key Jodie. Young people who don't respect themselves, aren't respected by anyone else and who then don't respect anything or anyone around them. I see people living their lives with aggression and conflict as a normal part of their daily routine and it seems that no-one is actually very interested in looking at the route causes of this - greed, consumerism, selfishness, poor role models (espcially male), poverty and a decaying moral and spiritual society. It won't be solved by more police officers or by locking more of these young people up.

Perhaps we need to turn a global spotlight onto this issue?

Hi Jodie

I was interested in your work in South Central LA. I work in inner city Nottingham in the UK (not as bad as LA, I think) but we also have a growing gang culture and increasing knife and gun crime. I'd be interested in how you and your partner tackled it and what the main factors in your success were.

Perhaps we could share some thoughts and ideas.

In peace and love
