We have a culture of violence which needs to be changed. On the largest scale, wars erupt when people are willing to support a leader's call for violence, to kill and be killed rather than to communicate and seek mutual solutions. I believe that people whose basic needs are met--who have adequate food, clothing, shelter, education, access to health care, and civil liberties, and who have reason to trust that these basics will remain intact tomorrow--are far less likely to support a lone voice calling for violence. In fact, they are more likely to seek to help the possessor of that voice seek appropriate mental health care than they are to take up arms and follow him. So, I believe that eliminating poverty and hunger, ensuring that everyone is secure in these most basic human rights, is essential to ending war and, ultimately, almost all violence.
Can we change the world?
Definitely
More about me
I'm more or less an ordinary Quaker mom trying to do my part to nurture the people of the only planet I know well. Much of my work now is focused in northeastern Pennsylvania, where I live, and I also feel a strong connection and desire to support those working for peace in Pakistan's border region.
