Dear Mutsuko,
It's lovely to hear from you and thank you for writing. You will soon be here in Israel and I would like to meet you. In fact there are many Buddhist groups in Israel and many Israelis take an interest in Buddhism. I think Buddhism has helped us a great deal.
there is now an umbrella Israeli Buddhist organization and they provide connections to all the Buddhist activities and groups in the country. Their address is: www.buddhism-israel.org
In 1994 the great Vietmanese Buddhist teacher, Tich Naat Haan visited here and after that his people came many times to give retreats and many Israelis and Palestinians visited his monastary in France. there are at least two Israeli Buddhist monks at his monastary in France. There is a small group here that practices Buddhism and is in touch with him.
There is also a very organized Tibetan Buddhist group here and many monks come from Daramsala here to teach. The web site address of that group is: www.dharma.org.il
there is also an Israeli group, with Israeli Buddhist teachers called Middle Way which is affliated with Christopher Titmus, an English Buddhist teacher who studies in Thailand. this group also does peace work, usually by hosting meetings and silent walks through the countryside. There founder is STephen Fulder.
There are also other Israeli Buddhist teachers such as Yaacov Raz and others who have a Buddhist learning program called Psychodarma.
there is also a learning center called The Diamond Way.
If you google Israel Buddhism, you will find a large number of articles and references to Buddhism in Israel.
the Dalai Lama has visited Israel many times and there is even and Israeli group called The friends of Tibet. Many Israelis visit in India and so they discovered the Tibetans but there are also Zen teachers here and even a Goenka Vipassana center that is very active.
When you come you will be able to meet Israeli Buddhists and perhaps feel at home.
Unfortunately, all this Buddhism and people stiving to learn a better way has not changed any of the governments policies.
