« The Miracle Is Worth The Wait » was the 2nd song written for the « 30 Songs for the Sunny Season » project, and was completed on January 8, 2013.

The inspiration for this opus came from conversations held with David, a somewhat peculiar fellow with whom I was sharing living spaces earlier this year. To the best of my memory, the first words he ever spoke to me were « I can guarantee world peace. » Obviously, the statement got my attention and I just had to know more about him. I eventually learned that he was on a mission to build an ultralight, and that, assuming I correctly understood his long-winded stories, world peace would be achieved upon completion of the aircraft. That particular causality remains to be seen, but one thing for sure, there was something strangely beautiful about how he just kept going against overwhelming odds.

It sometimes seems as if many of us have to build an ultralight of some sort, which will somehow transport us to our ideal. David definitely could trust that it was his fate to fly above the hill. Can you believe it is yours ?

The version embedded above was released earlier this year on the « The Abode Of The Blessed » EP.

verse 1
aviator you're working still
to build your ultralight
when it will fly above the hill
the bird will destroy the night

there's a new world to establish
a new order to crystallize
a skyward ladder to finish
an uprising to organize

you're pushing hard, we've seen you go
you will get there in the long run
dismiss your doubts you have to know
that you'll have your time in the sun

verse 2
jerusalem opens its gates
to let you see the golden tree
that patiently for you awaits
you will claim it when you are free

today tomorrow is unclear
yet it's no reason to worry
to get to the dream that's so dear
surrender to uncertainty

never give up you shining star
don't give in to the daily gloom
joy of this life heals every scar
and ripens each fruit to full bloom

verse 3
aviator you're working still
to build your ultralight
when it will fly above the hill
the bird will destroy the night

chorus
hone your feathers and keep your smile
you have a date with destiny
steady go for the extra mile
and you will soar to liberty
can you trust that it's your fate
the miracle is worth the wait

bridge
onward to complete harmony
at heaven's door often you've knocked
all of the time never knowing
that the entrance was never locked

last chorus
hone your feathers and keep your smile
you have a date with destiny
steady go for the extra mile
and you will soar to liberty
can you trust that it's your fate
though the road might not be straight
can it ever be too late
the miracle is worth the wait

« Mother Of Pearl» was the last song written in the location where the music for the « The Abode Of The Blessed » EP was composed. Yet, arguably, considering the clear stylistic and thematic distinctions between this opus and the pieces that preceded it, they probably shouldn't belong on the same album. Assuming that I eventually get the chance to properly record the 8 songs and 8 instrumentals put together during that particular period, « Mother Of Pearl» will likely serve as closing track, announcing what's to come.

In the context of the « 30 Songs for the Sunny Season » series, « Mother Of Pearl» was the 8th song that I wrote. The music and most of the lyrics were completed by January 21, 2013, but I had no satisfactory words for the bridge until the beginning of May.

The inspiration for the piece stems from how pearls come into being. When a microscopic intruder or parasite enters an oyster, it irritates the mollusk which secretes nacre, also called mother-of-pearl, to cover the undesirable and soothe itself. As the process is repeated and layers are added, a pearl is produced.

However such occurrences can also be interpreted alternatively as follows : when the intelligence that unites and animates all beings needs a pearl, it finds a way to introduce an irritant into an oyster, which will then transform the source of pain into the sought beautiful object.

When I look back on my life there is no doubt that the main incentive that has impelled me to create works of art throughout the years is a psychological trauma that I experienced as a teenager. In a manner similar to that of the oyster which soothes itself by adding layers of nacre onto the irritant, I healed my injured mind through repeated creative processes. Thus, conceivably, this might be one of the ways using which the intelligence underlying all things develops works of art, by creating the conditions that compel beings into action. And considering how ill-equipped I was to face the distressing event when it occurred, it seems plausible that this is also how artists are goaded towards maturity, carrying within themselves the motivation that urges them to give expression to what's in them.

verse 1
told love was forbidden
i used to play the fool
hopeless and angst-ridden
yet in me you saw the jewel

you cared to make me wise
led me to the river
made sure i saw the prize
across the great water

verse 2
with a dream to fulfil
and a heart to restore
i rowed like a windmill
to reach the other shore

you oversaw the tide
i sought stability
through this purposeful ride
i grew in adversity

verse 3
looking back i'm aware
each moment every day
you have always been there
with me on the journey

years of battle upstream
out of the days of yore
you are the constant theme
the ever open door

pre-chorus
you shape me
make me all
i can be
show me the
better me
whoa-oh-oh

chorus
you know how to make me pure
see me through the whirl
orchestrate the cure
o mother of pearl

my all-embracing oyster
take me in your swirl
add another layer
o mother of pearl

bridge
feed me your potion mother of pearl
relieve my tensions mother of pearl
rouse my devotion mother of pearl
show me the ocean

« Perfect Magic » is the 9th opus penned for the « 30 Songs for the Sunny Season » project. It was completed on February 6, 2013, and is the first new piece to follow the compositional rush that led to the « The Abode Of The Blessed » EP.

The lyrics were written in an « everything happens for a reason » frame of mind and aim to hint at how each and every life, even the apparently disadvantaged, is blessed with the loving support of the underlying intelligence that unites and animates all beings.

Although they are presented as separated in written form, the pre-chorus really evolves into the chorus, both lyrically and musically, and so the boundary between the two is not that clear-cut when I perform it. The current structure is basically verse -> pre-chorus -> chorus which means that the pre-chorus -> chorus sequence is heard four times overall. I'm sometimes under the impression that this might be one time too many, so the song will probably be edited before it is properly recorded.

« Perfect Magic » has the distinction of often serving as icebreaker whenever I go play in public places. Not that it is the easiest song of my repertoire, but it surely is one I am most comfortable playing.

verse 1
in this infinite world there's a man named Joe
really he's a boy with a thirst to know
when it was time for school he had no chance to go
it's so tough when you're coy to get out of skid row

verse 2
in this infinite world there's a woman named Lynn
really she's a girl whose broken heart has caved in
the onions and the garlic she overeats everyday
are no treats for her health but it keeps most people away

verse 3
in this infinite world there's a prime minister
people will tell you that he's an impostor
they haven't realized that indeed he is there
only to spur them to rise against all that's unfair

verse 4
in this infinite world all is in its good place
and everything unfolds at the proper pace
miracles occur as we intertwine
apparently apart but part of yours is part of mine

pre-chorus
yet it's hard to outgrow
what you're unaware of
when you're blind as life shows
the true meaning of love

chorus
that there's a cause for all things
and it's understanding
that it's part of the plan
try to trust 'til you can

life will never forsake
whichever road you pick
at the best time you will awake
to this perfect magic

The 23rd song written for the « 30 Songs for the Sunny Season » project is entitled « A Tide Of Positive Change » and was completed on March 24th, 2013.

The aim here was to come up with an inspiring and energetic song that can uplift the listener into an optimistic frame of mind. Considering the comments offered so far when I played it in public spaces, I'd venture to say that this particular objective has been achieved.

No audio nor video clips are available at this point as my game plan for this summer is to make the most of the sunny days and go out busking as often as practicable. In my crystal ball I can foresee myself switching into demo-producing mode sometime around mid-September. That being said, if you've been following my activities of the last few years or so, you know how reliable my crystal ball can be. But there's always hope, right ?

verse 1
there's a river running over
the consequences of your errors
putting out all the fires
that burn the fruits of your labours

you gotta wish it up muse it up
build it up to live it up
you gotta wish it up work it up
build it up

pre-chorus 1
trust in the dream that flows in you
parts of it stream inside me too
when it's ready let it be true
it'll sweep you off outta the blue

verse 2
this turning point you're pining for
is closer than ever before
never lose sight of the plot
and strike the iron when it's hot

you gotta keep going believing
the ending will be amazing
you gotta keep going believing
keep going

pre-chorus 2
trust the feeling inside of you
the water is flooding me too
out with the old in with the new
this current will bring me to you

verse 3
you've done your best you've passed the test
enjoy the rest you're being blessed
you've wished it up, you've built it up
now live it up

pre-chorus 3
trust the feeling inside of you
the water is flooding me too
out with the old in with the new
this current will bring me to you

chorus
no way to stop
this tide of positive change
the surf is up
let the wave rearrange
cream of the crop
time to reap your reward
expect the top
you have worked so hard

« To Kill Your Demons » was completed on March 10, 2013, and is the 20th song written for the henceforth entitled « 30 Songs for the Sunny Season » project.

Basically, the main point of the song is that most-if-not-all experiences, apparent catastrophes included, can be interpreted positively as opportunities for growth.

Again, I plan to repost the following lyrics with an audio or video clip when time allows for the recording and production of proper demos.

verse 1
you were waiting for the right word
for the phrasing no one has heard
no escaping the calendar
no book signing for the dreamer

pre-chorus 1
you've learned your lessons
paid for your crimes
to kill your demons
life took its time
verse 2
you were hoping to be a bird
you had two wings but wanted a third
scared of jumping you went downward
no high flying for the coward

pre-chorus 2
you've bitten lemons
you've bitten limes
to kill your demons
life took its time

verse 3
you were waiting for an answer
an opening on the future
you couldn't stick to the letter
no advancing for the sinner

pre-chorus 3
you've heard the sermons
you wrote the rhymes
to kill your demons
life took its time

verse 4
you were hoping to get a chance
to find a friend to share a dance
no one could get past your first glance
for the heartless there's no romance

pre-chorus 4
you've seen the omens
magic sublime
to kill your demons
life took its time

chorus
how many doors must pass
'til you go in at last
don't let your moment pass
just seize it fast

At some point during this past winter, I thought it would be interesting to see if I could come up with a bunch of songs that I could play on my own, without the need of a backing band. I had always wanted to try my luck at busking, but because of the demands of Poligraf, I never really had the chance to build a repertoire of original songs that require only guitar and vocals, without additional arrangements. Eventually I imagined that 30 songs would be enough, so I set out to write as much in time for the sunny season, and actually reached that goal on June 27th, when I completed the words to « 67th Heaven. »

« Pacify » is the fifth song that I wrote for this project. I chose to share this one first because I especially like how it turned out, not only in terms of contents, but also in how the poetry is structured and how the verses are linked together. The lyrics follow below. Possibly, I will republish them later with an audio or video clip if I can find some time to record demos, but for now I hope you enjoy the words as much as I do.

verse 1
no aces up your sleeve
you didn't have your way
no luck you're stuck
peace is kept at bay

unwilling to receive
the lesson of the day
fate daunts life wants
a price too high to pay

you're inclined to leave
however if you stay

Believe it or not (and if you do, please help me believe it too), but I just published an album. It's a 4-song EP entitled « The Abode Of The Blessed » that I recorded in an overnight session last weekend and produced this past week.

But first things first. Before I go into more details about the music, here's the abridged version of what happened since my last post.

After publishing « Takers Economy » at the end of August, I spent most of the following two months distributing and promoting it on the internet. The task was daunting and the progress was slow at first, but the process eventually yielded positive results.

Then I took a little time off, and I do mean off. I escaped to the countryside for about two weeks, where I mostly rested and dreamt about the next phase of my life. There was a lot of music making in those reveries. Far away from the city, I especially enjoyed the silence and the night skies. It had been a long while since I had last seen that many stars.

The return to civilization did not unfold quite as I had expected, and I finally had a chance to compose more music, and was even offered the opportunity to record some of it, which I gratefully accepted. The last few years had been dedicated to writing novels and essays, and so it felt very good to come back to music again. Indeed, I experienced it as a kind of rebirth, and so it was only apt that the classical guitar I had access to during this unexpected passage was a Renaissance model.

Over the course of my residency thus far, I wrote sixteen new compositions, eight songs and eight instrumentals, that I hope to release as a full-length album in the near future. I would have liked to produce them all here, but the tight recording window forced me to choose only a few.

The original plan was to record at least five of the compositions, and keep the four best tracks for the present EP. However, time constraints and technology determined which songs ultimately made it on the album.

The music is miles away from what I usually write. The pieces are basically folk songs that I believe most will categorize in the « singer-songwriter » genre. There are no intricate arrangements, it's just my voice and the nylon-string guitar. One thing for sure, it's a definite change of pace from the prog rock extravaganzas that I typically come up with.

Life being what it is, it looks like that will have to be it for now. I must run, really.

The album is available in various e-formats via Bandcamp. The description follows below. Thanks in advance for your support. I hope you enjoy the songs !

·

Does heaven really exist ?

Some insist that it does, yet others seem to think that there cannot be such a place.

I have been searching for paradise for most of my life, and on several occasions I actually thought I had discovered it, but in hindsight I'm not sure I can claim to have been very successful. Or in any case, that's what I used to reckon until I tried to resign myself to the unacceptable conclusion that it was merely a fanciful invention, and considered that I would never find it. That's about when I happened to stumble upon its hall.

I definitely wasn't looking for anything of the sort when I was offered to stay in this surprising location. Nor was I quite certain of where I was at first. However, after various eye-opening occurrences, it finally struck me that I very possibly have reached the vestibule to heaven. Apparently, the blessed come and go to this uncanny domain, some to rest for a while, and others to perform their angelic duties.

I haven't been officially admitted to paradise yet, so I'm only speculating, but it would appear that some of the guests here are waiting to be granted access. Or more precisely, we have a challenge to overcome before we are allowed to move onward.

« The Abode Of The Blessed » documents my unexpected sojourn in this enchanting mansion, this antechamber of the promised land, were I received much support, was taught important lessons, and experienced many validations of prior understandings.

The songs depict the task that I must discharge, some of the dwellers, and their own trials and tribulations. The music aims to provide inspiration and encouragement to those who have to go through a similar process.

All in all, having seen this place that feels like a gateway to paradise, it looks very likely that there's a heaven. So here I am, advancing into the unknown, all the while attempting to leave footprints behind so you can find your way too.

I've been nearly completely inactive in my social networks since mid-July or so. Not that I wouldn't have liked to participate, but I have been engrossed in the redaction of the above essay.

When I tackled the project, I thought it would take a few weeks at most, and that I would be able to maintain my regular pace in other activities. However, I soon realized that the endeavour required great amounts of attention, and that the most efficient way of discharging the task was to dedicate as much time as I could to it, as quickly as practicable, so that it wouldn't drag on forever.

I finished the first draft a little over one week ago, and the final revision was completed yesterday. If the process was more protracted and demanding than originally expected, it nonetheless led to some very interesting insights and discoveries, notably in terms of the implications of the oneness of all things and beings, and with regard to the existing initiatives and organizations that work to improve the conditions of creators and inventors.

Essentially, the document elaborates on the points that I had attempted to convey in concise form through several conversations held in June and July, which in retrospect weren't the best context for such an exercise. In hindsight though, there was clearly something impelling me to finally voice my position on the question, after I had silenced it for too long. Given all that is expressed in the text, I doubt that it would have been possible for me to come up with an effort as exhaustive any sooner. So, perhaps the timing was perfect, or at least better than I reckoned when I began writing.

I am glad that the undertaking gave me the opportunity to explain my conception of art and of its nature, value, and function, as I had tried to achieve this in the past, but circumstances had ultimately prevented me from attaining the objective.

Hopefully, the perspectives that I offer on the issue of illegal file sharing and its consequences in the lives of downloaders, artists, and the whole of society, will prove useful and enlightening to many readers.

The description follows below. I wish you a most enjoyable reading !

·

Over the last decade or so, file sharing has become a widespread phenomenon. As much as having the possibility of exchanging information almost instantaneously can represent a blessing in terms of communication and progress, it obviously opens the door to pursuits that enjoy a far less angelic reputation.

Still, the overall picture suggests that a significant number of internet users participate in such ill-famed activities. Considering this state of affairs, could illegal file sharing actually be a positive process for those downloaders, and for the collectivity alike ?

The question is generally approached from the angle of its economic impacts, but there is evidently more to the issue than its pecuniary dimension.

« Takers Economy » proposes an alternative look at illegal file sharing in light of the role of art in society, and in the context of the oneness of all beings and things.

In addition, the inquiry explores the global picture from which the circumstances emerge, and attempts to characterize the underlying culture that gives rise to them.

Finally, the essay introduces a philosophy of endosymbiotism that aims to foster attitudes and behaviours that accord with the ethics of the inherent unseparateness of being.
Confrontation (Polygraph part 2 - revisited)tag:ipeace.us,2012-07-24:2217368:BlogPost:32191612012-07-24T16:08:44.000ZChristopher Stewarthttps://ipeace.us/profile/ChristopherStewart

« Polygraph » is intended as a portrait of human relationships turning to the sour, hinting at the necessity of constant kindness and genuineness. The suite lasts about ten minutes and is composed of the following four sections : « Exposition, » « Confrontation, » « Deliberation, » and « Vindication. »

While the introductory movement describes a heated yet still somewhat civilized exchange, the second chapter, « Confrontation, » aims to depict the often difficult yet cathartic experience of having to stand one's ground and defend one's views when criticism or outright attack threatens one's balance and inner peace.

The section was originally conceived as an instrumental wherein a dialogue between guitar and saxophone represents the conversation as it devolves into somewhat of a shouting match. Eventually though, I experimented with replacing the already written notes with words, more as a literary exercise than in an attempt to convert the piece into a sung duet. The undertaking proved harder than I had expected, but in hindsight that's what made it even more worthwhile. The lyrics are presented below, and assuming the HTML is preserved as posted, the replies of the guitar should appear in black on the right side, while those of the saxophone should be seen in white on the left side.

« Sooner Or Later » does not comes from Poligraf's catalogue as such. Rather, it is a piece for solo guitar that I intend to publish on an album of about ten acoustic compositions, all featuring the classical guitar, either playing solo or accompanied by other acoustic instruments.

The original title of this piece was « Maybe Later, » but I never liked it that much because of the element of doubt and uncertainty that it conveys, which doesn't fit the music. I reworked some parts while getting ready to record the present demo, and along with the changes came the new and more appropriate title.

While the first half of the piece starts in a reflective mood that leads into a peaceful passage, the second half remains upbeat and playful until the tongue-in-cheeky coda.

Here's the poetry that I composed for this instrumental :

say do you remember
when you renounced your throne
time had come to gather
the fruits that you had sown

couldn't stand no longer
circumstances outgrown
nor could future further
unconsciously postpone

true love is forever
and you had always known
that sooner or later
that road would be your own

setting out to conquer
noble the enterprise
chariot of fire
you hero on the rise

driven by the hunger
and the smile in those eyes
sometimes lows would deter
but you thrived on the highs

tipped off by the spider
rewarded by the flies
shooting star of ardour
serendipitous skies

angelic caretaker
inspired you to surmise
that sooner or later
you would obtain the prize

once blindfolded juggler
one hand behind your back
willing to consider
one more torch in the stack

consummate plate spinner
you always had the knack
to wow the onlooker
while avoiding the wrack

but that challenge greater
had you taken aback
fearful of disaster
prone to panic attack

tyro wire walker
trembling above the pack
left with daily wonder
why life cut you no slack

would it have been clearer
written in white on black
that sooner or later
your step would miss the track

witnessing in horror
your creation finespun
destroyed in a quarter
the dream had come undone

down under the weather
by your guilt overrun
dark clouds of dishonour
were obscuring the sun

but life wasn't over
though the event did stun
and still your endeavour
could be a fruitful one

had you known your labour
was meant for the long run
much sooner than later
your quest would have begun

as hope touched your shoulder
you lifted up your chin
finding back your valour
you recovered your grin

and against your fervour
you knew walls would give in
and sooner or later
that you couldn't but win

looking back together
and enjoying the view
pray this question answer
tell me you always knew

was it any wonder
that it had to be you
that sooner or later
you would be set free too
The Threshold Bookcast : Chapter 18 : Lightning Strikestag:ipeace.us,2012-06-22:2217368:BlogPost:32082402012-06-22T21:59:37.000ZChristopher Stewarthttps://ipeace.us/profile/ChristopherStewart

Chapter 18 : Lightning Strikes

Richard Ramsay is the star of the eighteenth episode of The Threshold Series, the concluding chapter of « 2206 : Window Onto A New World. »

We find the veteran politician staring outwards from a window of the sky lounge of his private yacht, musing about the weather, while on a visit to Bahía Alegría.

« The former Chancellor had needed to take a short vacation from all the craziness, to let the dust settle after the spectacular collapse of the schemes of his party. But apparently, even right in the heart of the bay of joy, satisfaction didn't come easy for him. The ordinarily hot and sunny resort had been showered by storms ever since the luxury vessel had moored in the small inlet after which the popular holiday spot had been named. And so, instead of savouring a fun escape in the sunshine in the company of some of the people he truly appreciated, he had spent most of his time ruminating. He had voyaged all the way across the globe only to ponder the events of the recent years, and how they had ultimately culminated in his defeat in the Federal election. »

Forced to stay inside the boat, the retiring statesman passes the time talking with his sister Chloe and his assistant, Peter Conrad. The conversations will lead to surprising revelations.

Here's « Lightning Strikes, » the culminating instalment of the first season of the Threshold Bookcast. I wish you all a most enjoyable reading !

Interestingly enough, this concluding chapter is being published on June 22, which is the date that has inspired the title of the novel. This wasn't something I planned when I decided to release the series. Rather, the move came as a response to the circumstances of the moment. I had been considering the possibility since the end of 2011, mostly because of my frustration that the book was not attracting readers as fast as I had expected. It was waiting patiently on virtual shelves, hoping to be discovered, and that seemed somewhat of a waste. So I improvised a first episode, and when I eventually organized the process for the following weekly instalments, as I entered the events in my calendar, I realized that the series would end today. I considered it a sign that I had made the right decision.

At this time, I have no idea of when I will publish the second volume, nor of if I will release it in a similar manner. However, I can safely announce that the tentative title of that novel is « 2207 : Mechanics Of Change, » and that I'm just about done with the first fourteen chapters. Contrary to 2206 which covers only the last quarter or so of the corresponding Ovelian year, the second tome will span all of 2207. If I follow the plan that I have mind mapped thus far, I still need to write about twelve or thirteen more chapters before the story is told. In other words, that means I'm about halfway through, and given that I've been working on it since mid-October 2011, I'm not sure whether or not I'll be able to complete it before the end of the year. That being said, I am sometimes tempted to begin the second season before I finish the book. My mind is not made up at the moment.

If you want to stay updated on how it all unfolds, I invite you to follow the Facebook and Google+ profiles of the series, which are linked at the end of each chapter, in the « About the Series » section. You can also subscribe to my Issuu channel, where the episodes are currently available.

And on this note ends the first season of the Threshold Bookcast. Thanks to all who have taken interest and enjoyed the story thus far ! Hopefully, I will be able to announce my plans during the summer, depending on how the writing and other projects develop. Farewell until then !

★

The first book, « 2206 : Window Onto A New World, » focuses on the end of the year 2206, which culminates on an important federal election that will be impacted by the discovery of an anomaly in the nearby outer space.

« Asking For A Miracle » is a short instrumental arranged for acoustic instruments, and written in a time of dire need.

While working on the composition, I recalled a tarot reading I gave to the fiancée of my sole nephew, sometime after she had lost her first unborn baby. Although she never voiced her question, I felt that she was hoping to try to give birth again. The cards clearly told that the possibility was there despite what had gone wrong in the past, and that her attempt would be successful as long as she was willing to commit to the process and make the required sacrifices. I remember she was visibly moved by the reading and very happy about the possible outcome.

Her son, my sole grandnephew, is now three years old. The piece is dedicated to him.

The poetry has very little to do with that story. About half the stanzas have been written around the end of April, as observations on events and people in various online communities I am part of. The remainder have been inspired by interactions that took place in the recent weeks. In publishing the verses, it is my hope that some of the prayers and questions they voice will be answered.

The central character of this week's instalment of The Threshold Series is Rahu Lüli, the young cenobite from Kõrgus.

At the beginning of the chapter, the teenager is getting ready to leave the monastery, and he ponders the events that have led him to believe that he has found the identity of the next spiritual leader of the remote community.

« As he finished putting his things in his backpack, the novice recalled how he had come to the decision. After what Kasulik Sõber had revealed, when he had climbed to the plateau where the solar panels were arrayed, the visions of the unknown lady had increased in frequency, and their details had become more precise. His original impressions had been confirmed. The woman in his glimpses neither had the physiognomy nor the skin pigmentation typical of the people of Kõrgus. Moreover, she was very pretty, and in fact her features starkly contrasted with her white hair, suggesting she was actually much older than what her vernal face led him to believe. And considering her clothing, she was clearly some sort of religious figure. »

Proceeding towards the gates of the cloister, the boy will encounter friends whose influence could very well make him reconsider his plans.

« Over the years, the physicist had learned the hard way that there were transition phases, or at any rate that's how he referred to them. During these episodes, life required him to plough forward at all costs, no matter how exhausted he was, and no matter which obstacles he was facing, lest part of the efforts he had invested in the endeavour, if not all of them, would be cruelly wiped out overnight by circumstances ostensibly coming from beyond his sphere of influence. Strangely, he had come to associate them with the notion of electronic quantum leaps, inasmuch as only two possible outcomes were permitted, either all the way, or none at all. And if the lessons had been heart wrenching, at the very least he had profited immensely from developing the ability to recognize the exacting passages, even in the absence of obvious indicators, such as deadlines for instance. »

This week's instalment of the Threshold Bookcast takes place in Hasania, the so-called artificial state governed by Omar Malaki.

As the chapter begins, we find Richard Ramsay, the legendary Conservative leader, entertaining himself around the estate of his wealthy hosts, while he waits to meet the patriarch of the dynasty.

« The veteran statesman had never interested himself in the process by which artificial islands were brought into existence, or rather, not more than superficially anyhow. His agenda was usually too crowded for him to take the time and learn about the details of such realizations. He preferred to focus elsewhere, content to simply know that the enterprises were achievable. After all, particulars were the concerns of the specialists, the engineers, architects, ecologists, builders, and whoever else were involved in the operations. Yet, as he strolled around the area, surrounded by the astonishingly diverse variety of floras that had been selected to complement the extravagantly landscaped terrain, he had to admit that the creation was bordering on the miraculous. If he had visited the paradisiacal place just a few years earlier, of all this amazing collection of beautiful objects, not a single item, not even the smallest grain of sand, none of it would have been there to be seen. The vista would have comprised only the sky, the thin distant coastline, and, as if one had travelled to a desert of water, the undulating dunes of the ocean. »

Chapter 14 : Silent Talking

The fourteenth episode of The Threshold Series focuses on Olivia Romero, the Chief Environmental Adviser of Neo Apollonia.

At the beginning of the chapter, the former activist is walking towards the church of the Community, all the while pondering the circumstances which have led her to spend most of her life on Ovel.

« Such preoccupations wouldn't have crossed her mind back when she had first set foot in the megapolis, the quinquagenarian fondly recollected. It had been almost forty years already. She was among the original generation of Ovelians born aboard a space station. She had not even visited the homeland before making the bold decision of moving down there as a young adult. Settling in Neo Delphi, a neighbouring city, to attend Parnassus University, she had immediately fallen in love with the planet, its impossibly vast, seemingly unlimited outdoors, and its incredible biodiversity. In fact, the attraction had been so overwhelming that, after only minimal consideration, she had altered her plans and chosen to study ecology, of all subjects for an off-worlder, eager to deepen her knowledge of the apparently inexhaustible source of amazement. »

This time, we find the novice reminiscing as he explores unknown territory uphill, following a hunch that has occurred to him prior to the morning ritual.
Something was decidedly wrong about the view, and it couldn't but have a meaning. Over the years, the pitch black walls of the cylindrical hole had obviously been darkened by the combustion fumes rising from the cauldrons of scented oil. Yet, the fact that there was no light at all coming from its high end seemed rather singular. The sun had already appeared above the horizon, and so the sky had been bright enough to be visible. And, as the smoke wasn't accumulating under the dome, there couldn't have been some unidentified obstacle blocking its passage. { Something doesn't add up } he ruminated, still feeling compelled to investigate as he advanced upwards. » »

This week's instalment of The Threshold Series revolves around Bernard Sturn and features Veshtar, the almost barren land also known as the radioactive planet.

As the chapter begins, the illustrious physicist is enjoying a cup of green tea in his office, reviewing the events of the day while he waits for his newly hired assistant, Frank Evans, to join him for an informal evening meeting.

« At the beginning of the morning, Daniel Milton had sent him a long video mail which had revived the possibility that his new colleague could in fact be an industrial spy who had successfully infiltrated his team, in all likelihood in the pay of one of the independent nations. Obviously, the mere presence of a potential intruder in the Veshtari scientific facility constituted a threat that the security expert had to address, or at least report to the RDA. The space engineer had immediately recorded a brief response, arguing that he could probably clarify the matter on his own, and thus save everyone much time and energy. And at worst, should that request be denied, it yet afforded him the delay he needed to determine the safest way to proceed, and hopefully avoid a full-fledged investigation. Or at any rate, that had been the plan. »

As a somewhat less overly busy front running candidate, it was part of his duty to engage with people everyday and visit the far reaches of the Federation. And although he still had difficulty with the tedious travelling, he had recognized the value of savouring each one of the new spectacles offering themselves to his pale green eyes. Whether he were witnessing the often desolate landscapes of the sadly disfigured Ovel, or the lofty spacescapes which he had been awed to watch ever since the Progressive Parties had begun their tour of the stations, he would at least attempt to receive the beauty they conveyed. He had always thought he had seen stars in his youth, growing up in a remote farming community, away from the glitter and the greyness of the megapolises, yet this was nothing compared to the vista he was presently revelling in from one of the observation decks of Harmonia Eleven. The earnest and pragmatic administrator he used to be would not have dared to go sightseeing just prior to such a crucial meeting as the one he was about to attend. The wiser person he now was knew better. And given how off-worlders were generally significantly more respectful than their fellow Ovelians, there really was no reason to deprive himself of the pleasure. »

Chapter 9 : Careful With That Axe, Eugene

Richard Ramsay, the Federal Chancellor of Ovel, is once again the central character of the weekly instalment of The Threshold Series.

At the beginning of the chapter, the veteran Conservative is temporarily escaping the pressures of his functions, hastening undercover towards a secret destination.

« Manifestly, the megapolis had become one of extremes. In downtown Triton Aeolus, where he had been dropped off, which was far from being one of the disadvantaged neighbourhoods of the vast urban area, the disguised ruler had gone from a place of ostentatious wealth to one of abject poverty just by crossing a few streets. And so, only minutes after having parted ways with his trustworthy helper, he was rid of the hustle and bustle of the boulevard and surrounded by the raw, desolate, yet peaceful landscape so common to those who had to live in the daily company of scarcity. Regardless of grey clouds and bleak environment, behind his shades, his eyes were bright, and underneath his long, black leather raincoat, his heart was light. He was savouring each instant of the quiet time as he trod the drying sidewalks, once in a while using his cane to steady himself as he would step on an uneven slab of derelict pavement. »

As he proceeds on his way to his undisclosed objective, the experienced politician hopes his disguise will protect him against undesirable encounters.

Chapter 8 : Nous Sommes Du Soleil

This week's episode of the Threshold Bookcast revolves around members of a religious community living in a high-perched monastery located in the highest mountain range on Ovel.

As the narrative begins, two of the cenobites, a novice and his experienced teacher, are climbing up towards a hillside cave that the teenager will be allowed to enter for the first time.

« The young monk had seen with his own almond-shaped, dark brown eyes some of those who had attempted to disclose the mysteries of the Tähtsaim. First, they had suddenly become confused as they had started to relate their stories. Then, seemingly having great difficulty to utter even a single word, their throats hurting and burning, they had slowly lost their voices, forced to silence for weeks and even quarters on end in some instances. And once their ability to speak had ultimately returned, they had been unable to recollect their visits to the temple. In similar fashion, those who intended to communicate with gestures would lose motility, regaining it only as memories vanished. Just prior to being exposed, drawings and written accounts would incomprehensibly disappear or be destroyed, often by natural causes, regardless of the precautions taken to protect them. Pictures wouldn't come out right, recordings would be irremediably crippled by noise, and devices would generally behave erratically. Remarkable events inevitably occurred whenever somebody would want to reveal what they had discovered in the secluded place. »

We follow the younger monastic in his discoveries and find out how he is about to be thrust into the heart of an adventure that could turn out to be much bigger than him.

The renowned researcher had been looking for an engineer to help him conceive an artificial intelligence, and ever since finding out about the opportunity, Frank hadn't been the same. In fact, he had behaved like an out of control version of the passionate geek she had known and loved when they had originally met at Parnassus University. Becoming literally obsessed with the subject, he had learned anything and everything he could regarding cognition, neural networks, cyborgs, and robots. And when not reading or developing prototypes and who knew what else on their server, he had been getting back into shape to fulfil the criteria of the RDA. If at first it had relieved her to see him in such an enthusiastic mindset after the period of doubts and moodiness that his unanticipated unemployment had ushered in, in the long run it had grown increasingly unnerving to her. She had come to resent having to take care of her partner, their daughter, and their home, virtually by herself, while he acted like some kind of aspiring astronaut. »

« In The Vortex » is an energetic instrumental put together while toying with ideas leftover from « Informaëlstrom » and « Leftoverturned. »

The intent here was to communicate the experience of feeling enthusiastic and determined despite being faced with a demanding or overwhelming challenge.

The title refers to Esther Hicks' concept of the vortex, or to be more precise, to the experience of being in that vortex, a state of mind characterized by purposeful joy and focused forward motion.

The demo is a shorter version of the composition which was edited to fit the requirements of the Melodic Revolution Records Theme Song Contest held in 2009.

Here's the accompanying poetry :

where is that road unknown leading to the apex
so many paths outgrown, the memories perplex
bearing this cross of stone, this addictive reflex
to self-denial prone, self-fulfilling the wrecks

like an angel, fallen, caged behind bars of steel
competing with Chiron, uncongenial ideal
a praiseworthy healer who themselves cannot heal
a sought after teacher hankering for the real

no gain in lamenting, dwelling on what's unfair
better to keep going than fall prey to despair
reaching the objective is no simple affair
achievers, selective, of woes avoid the snare

discerning right and wrong is neither here nor there
one will not hear a song who finds fault with its air
if harder to summon, love stands beyond compare
neither couth nor common can do without their share

and therefore a gulf lies, obvious in plain sight
between doing what's wise and wielding what is right
those who have seen the prize, inspired by its delight
are watching from the skies, unhindered in their flight

building a momentum, unrestrained energy
rise ad infinitum, defying gravity
joy is summum bonum, ultimate therapy
live to the maximum in serendipity

forever on the mark, no cause for atonement
the flow maintains the spark, the zone yields attainment
angels cooperate, in perfect alignment
choices perpetuate eternal contentment

Chapter 6 : It Can Happen

In this week's edition of the Threshold Bookcast, we follow Jake Harvey as he visits the illustrious Mistress Aeira for a private consultation.

At the beginning of the episode, the former businessman reminisces some of the events that have lead him to the political arena, and ponders what awaits him should his bid for the Chancellery of the Ovelian Federation turn out to be successful.

« At a relatively young age, an excessively busy working life had brought the tall blond man the financial independence he had been seeking. But socially things had been more difficult, and indeed never truly rewarding, as if there had been a price to pay for his success. And then his circumstances had improved dramatically as he had chosen a new career. Or maybe had it been the new career that had chosen him ? Being elected leader of the New Light Party and voted in as representative in the Global Chamber had actually ushered in a very welcome change of pace. His responsibilities rarely amounted to the craziness he remembered from the time he had been directing his own venture. Yet, he was merely the chief of a secondary opposition party. The head of a Federation comprising no less than one hundred and twenty-seven states including colonies onboard stations orbiting the homeland and on a neighbouring planet surely couldn't enjoy such leisure. »

The story unfolds to reveal various relationships of influence between mentors and protégés.

As the title suggests, the fifth chapter of « 2206 : Window Onto A New World » reveals more details of the recently discovered spatial anomaly, the baffling phenomenon that has all of Ovel talking.

In this instalment, we meet the other two key figures of the Coalition of Progressives, namely, Laura-Sylvia Bauer, head of the Greens, and Edward Rogers, chief of the Liberals, who collaborate with Jake Harvey in order to remove the Conservatives at the helm of the Global Government.

« The Liberal mused that the public opinion had been rather cruel towards his troops since the launch of the campaign. The platform of the formation, or obvious lack thereof as its detractors had been saying, was clearly not attracting the sympathy of the voters. The performance of most of his candidates had been such that almost all of his counsellors had advised to accept the proposition of the New Light Party and officialize the projected union, even prior to election day, as it constituted the best hope of accessing power. »

At the beginning of the episode, the trio of politicians and some of their staff are gathered in a conference room wherein a scientific consultant proceeds to brief them about the mysterious discontinuity. The dynamics of the developing relationships between the three party leaders come to the fore as the presentation unfolds.

« The star candidate mused that if the political crusade was very demanding, his motivations were very strong. Possibly for the first time in over forty years, there was a real chance of removing the almighty Conservative Party from office and actually changing the Global Government. The last time any other formation had been in charge of the Federation, the Liberals in that specific instance, he had yet to be born, thus he had never known any other regime. Nonetheless, this time around he was standing right in the eye of the storm, as the New Light Party, of which he had recently become the chief, was in position to write a new chapter in the history of Ovelian politics as instigator of the first coalition to ever be entrusted with the reins of power. And as if the situation wasn't sufficiently stimulating already, his atypical and charismatic style was yielding impressive numbers in the polls, keeping him in the limelight as probable leader of the gathering. He could recognize the feeling, and he knew what it meant. He could legitimately aspire to be the next Chancellor. »

The Bookcast

I was more than surprised this morning when I googled the terms “bookcast” and “bookcasting.” I had imagined that what I was expecting to see in the results would have been common practice in this day and age, and yet I actually saw very little of what I had in mind. The Bookcast

I was more than surprised this morning when I googled the terms “bookcast” and “bookcasting.” I had imagined that what I was expecting to see in the results would have been common practice in this day and age, and yet I actually saw very little of what I had in mind. Moreover, I couldn't find entries for the words in Wikipedia, nor in the Wiktionary. In fact, this is the best definition I stumbled upon :

« The goal of a bookcast is to cast as in “to set forth or let loose” a response to the book that shares not the story of the book but something that the book brought out in you, perhaps what you felt or learned through the reading and reflecting. » – BookHenge

I had supposed that bookcasting was closer in intent to other forms of webcasting, like podcasting for instance. That is to say, I had assumed that a bookcast was a means of broadcasting the story itself, and not merely impressions evoked by the story, just like music podcasts generally include the music itself, and not only comments about the music.

That being said, I haven't altered my plans one iota in light of the finding. Via this bookcast, I will thus release the first book of The Threshold series. Each episode will consist in a complete chapter that will be available for online reading.

This is obviously an experiment for me. Let's see where this leads to.

The Series

The Threshold relates the saga of the Ovelian civilization, a society very similar to our own, as it heads towards one of the most dramatic chain of events of its history.

The first book, « 2206 : Window Onto A New World, » focuses on the end of the year 2206, which culminates on an important federal election that will be impacted by the discovery of an anomaly in the nearby outer space.

Here's the synopsis of the first book, which also outlines some of the majors arcs of the entire series :

At the turn of the century, Ovel must face the consequences of its accelerated growth. One hundred and twenty seven federated countries and eleven sovereign nations, spread across the homeland and in colonies settled onboard orbiting stations and on a nearby planet. Fourteen billion inhabitants struggling to thrive under the rule of a corrupted Global Government, in power for over forty years.

Fuelled by a recent scientific finding, the once in a lifetime discovery of a discontinuity in the cosmic fabric of the neighbouring space, a coalition of politicians is willing to stand up for the people and radically change things.

Now relegated to the ranks of an obscure sect, the once dominant Community and its disciples must effectively handle the requirements of the Celestials to ensure that the most favourable of all possible destinies comes to pass.

Meanwhile, halfway across the world, a young monk must learn to collaborate with the Enlightened Ones in order to successfully discharge the essential task he has accepted to fulfil in behalf of his monastery.

Will the crucial 2206 electoral campaign climax on the emergence of a charismatic Progressive leader, or will the decried Chancellor prevail despite the many forces scheming for his downfall ?

On a background of environmental and financial crises, and religious influences intertwining with political manoeuvres to determine the fate of the overpopulated orb, The Threshold chronicles the evolution of the Ovelian civilization as it heads towards unprecedented upheaval.

The Chapter

The first chapter, « Homeworld, » introduces one of the main protagonists of the story, Bernard Sturn. The famous physicist is currently working for the Research and Development Administration on Veshtar, the sole inhabited planet in the neighbourhood of Ovel. At the beginning of the narrative, the scientist arrives on the motherland.

As it is the first of the bookcast, the chapter is exceptionally preceded by a prologue.

Without further ado, here's « Homeworld. » I wish you an enjoyable reading !
