Joanna Macy in Toronto: The Great Turning, the third human revolution

Quiet friend who has come so far,

feel how your breathing makes more space around you.

Let this darkness be a bell tower

and you the bell. As you ring,

what batters you becomes your strength.

Move back and forth into the change.

What is it like, such intensity of pain?

If the drink is bitter, turn yourself to wine.

In this uncontainable night,

be the mystery at the crossroads of your senses,

the meaning discovered… Continue

Imagine the world if the students in Tianamen Square had been victorious

Today is the 20th Anniversary of the massacre at Tianamen Square. Imagine how the world might have been different if those students and workers who so bravely and peacefully faced down soldiers and tanks would have triumphed in their demands for a more democratic society.

While the rest of the world pays tribute to those brave students and workers, including tens of thousands of people in Hong Kong the Chinese government is doing everything possible including banning Twitter and dire… Continue

We are all Tamil

If you are in Canada, take a minute right now and email your MP to ask him or her to support the demand that Canada use its influence to pressure the Sri Lankan government to call an immediate ceasefire and stop the slaughter of Tamil civilians.

The 200,0000 strong Tamil community in Toronto has been organizing an escalating series of massive non-violent protests in Toronto and Ottawa over… Continue

A Tribute to a Fierce Loving Mother

I don’t usually pay much attention to Mother’s Day. It isn’t just the commercialism. All holidays are commercialized. If the truth be told, I’ve never really valued motherhood all that much. I come from the generation of women that fought for women to be recognized for qualities beyond being mothers and wives. I grew up wanting to be the opposite of my mother who I saw as subordinate to a man who was unworthy of her. In the fierce battle to… Continue

Can you be feminist and anti-war? Are you kidding?

The day before yesterday still in a bit of a reverie after more than 24 hours without television, radio or newspapers in my friends' beautiful house in the bush near Victoria I was awakened on the ferry into Vancouver by an astonishing call. Sandra Martin from the Globe and Mail asked me, "Judy, is it possible to be a feminist and be anti-war?" What? I thought Where is this coming from.? Of course I knew of the Western outrage at the proposed family law in Afghanistan that made women's… Continue

Evo Morales, President of Bolivia wins another step in democracy in Bolivia through hunger strike

Yesterday, Evo Morales, the second Indigenous President in the history of the Americas since colonization stopped a five day hunger strike after the Senate stopped blocking the new electoral laws.

Evo Morales, President of Bolivia went on a hunger strike last Thursday to pressure the Senate to pass the new constitution. Despite the more than 60% majority in a referendum approving the new constitution that founds a non-colonial, non-neoliberal Bolivia, the right-wing dominated Senate… Continue

35,000 March in London united in a demand to Put People for the G20

I am not sure if people on I Peace believe that those working for social justice around the world are an important part of the movement for peace but I do. I believe the grand movements that we have seen emerge in Europe over the past weeks demanding a response to the economic crisis that meets the needs of people are speaking truth to power and insisting that our governments represent us...an important step towards peace. In my book Transforming… Continue

A strong stand out of conviction passion and hope

This morning I got an e mail that lifted my spirits and made me believe again in the possibility of a better world. It was a letter from the wonderful film maker John Greyson on his recent decision to join the boycott against Israel.

Feminism, friendship and spirituality

March 8 is International Women’s Day but in Toronto, we celebrate IWD on the Saturday closest to March 8 I usually do I went to the rally and march that has been held every year since 1975.

On March 8. I had lunch with my friend Velcrow on Toronto Island, where he lives. I’ve been having some trouble healing from a leg injury that is causing me a lot of pain. I’ve been to the chiropractor, who made it worse, the massage therapist and the Chinese doctor who make it better for a day or… Continue

My new book Transforming Power

Last night I got a box full of books from Penguin. It's hard to explain what an incredible moment it is to see a book you have written in its final form. Transforming Power: From the personal to the political is my fourth book. It explores new paths to social and political change in the Americas and Europe. In the book I argue that to meet the challenges of the crisis faced by the planet and its… Continue

Taking action to stop war

I am one of the eight Jewish women who occupied the Israeli consulate in Toronto last Wednesday to protest the Israeli assault on Gaza on Wednesday. i have been heartsick watching the destruction of Gaza and the pain being inflicted on their people. I've been an activist all my life but don't often feel that civil disobedience is effective. The frustration we felt in trying to speak out as Jews who don't agree with what Israel is doing led us to this non-violent action of resistance. After… Continue
