through millions of years as tribal nations
where violence was used for domination,
genetic memory played a hand
deep inside the minds of man.

from days when aggression was the test
for those who would rule the rest,
when man was not the food chain top,
and no one considered killing should stop.

in that age with no written history
man evolved survival chemistry.
aggressive behaviors start to show
when adrenalin starts to flow.

Now society has taken a turn
but violence seems undeterred.
trying to learn to control that gene
causes many a person to scream.

we hear the terminology of war
'civilian casualties,' and more.
action or not we must decide
when we hear of a 'genocide.'

does our morality have to yield
when we hear of a 'killing field?'
'collateral damage' make us distraught?
or do we just deny our thoughts?

action will be necessary
if we are to really bury
the dictator, and the power monger
and make the will for peace stronger.

can nonviolent action really work?
or from most others just draw a smirk?
uniting the efforts of civilians
will change the world for millions

look only within your own skin
to find the best place to begin
the world would be much less mean
if everyone could suppress that gene

Very moving poem,so very true~ please read my lyrics~poem "A Cry for Peace" I wrote in the 80's and ex-husband wrote the music in 1994. I put on my page as a blog post before I knew about the group Peace Poetry. Our poems are a bit similar, however yours is much, much better! I am not a writer or poet, even though I have been writing poetry since childhood.I had something to say and that's just how it manifested. No one has left a comment,I guess it is not very good. However the song we produced from it is. I do not have the ability to add the actual song. Thank you for sharing Papead~Peace & Love to you.

These are some powerful thoughts being put down for the world to see my friend. You might be opening yourself up for some harsh critism but you be getting any from me. I love the fact you speak your mind,; it's hard hitting and honest, two traits I admire in people.

Thanks for inviting me to this gem of a site.

Best
