Part III: An Homage To Triangularly Folded Flags- Wasted!
11/19/09
“Desperate, Dreaming”
Apologies for not fitting into your system
Not living for money or out fighting terrorism
Home, alone- family-less for a time- just being
Openly unemployed, uninsured, desperate- believing
Miraculously enough, that maybe i could make a difference
A dream i keep having- again and again, sentence by sentence
Getting closer to it, it seems, with every word, every letter
Emerging- urging you, too, to help dream this world better
Too bad it’s just a crazy dream- i’m already asleep...
Over it- why should i keep writing?? you’re not listening to me.
“21-Gun Salute?”
Triangularly folded flags laid solemnly down
Readied for caskets bound into the ground
Image intended for a hero’s loved ones
As their coffin is lowered six feet under
No one suffers as much as these families do
Getting instead of their son a 21-gun salute
Used in a war it seems no one quite gets
Lost, brought home lifeless, put into pits
Appropriately honored only after we lose them
Recognized for their valor only post-mortem
Left to fight out a war in a land far, far away
You say there’s a way to win- BUT IT ISN’T A GAME!.
“Destruction Reduction!”
Following orders fearlessly into the fight
Only to find they’re not equipped right
Let alone trained for the mission ahead
‘Dying’ to help- they joined, didn’t they? now dead
Eaten alive by bullets, grenades & I.E.D.s
Done. finished with service... early. deceased.
Fallen; folded flag handed over to family
Left for mother, father, brother- whoever came to see
A hero off; away to wherever we fly when ‘freed’
Gone to that place due to our country’s greed
Sent off- life-full to begin with now life-less
Waiting silently six feet under- a new address
A new ‘home’ to visit for those still here, left behind
Soundlessly mourning- by their own country robbed blind
Their child taken for a ride to the other side of the world
Enlisted, processed, relocated, stationed there to hurl
Deathly metal from tin cans dealing wanton destruction
if that’s all they’re there for, I demand a REDUCTION!
Part IV: Another Dead Battery
11/21/09
“One Dead Battery”
One dead battery, another dead body
No more pain, a future now plotted
Evenly entombed- a tour through; phrases
Dealt carefully attempting to explain this
Every last dead battery is one more too many
A piece of peace drained; a loss for our country
‘Duty calls,’ they said, and our soldiers answered
But the headlines i see keep seeing them interred
Another homage to our fallen heroes
Trying so bravely to land ordered blows
Torn from home, torn into two by the fighting
Each, if questioned, will say it’s quite ‘exciting’
Ready for combat until they see it first-hand
Yearning for action until their unit loses a man.
