Tania Gustafson

Spring has finally arrived. The pussy willow tree in our front year is budding, clusters of tulip leaves are poking up all over in our back garden and neighbours have begun spring cleaning in anticipation of the much-loved barbecue season.
As I watch people busily cleaning driveways, decks and backyards I wonder how many have thought about "spring cleaning" their bodies as well, a.k.a. detox and cleanse.
Over the last several years I have come across a number of detoxes and cleanses, some of which I ventured to try, but was never impressed with the ingredients, the restrictions imposed or the results of any of them.
Some, in my opinion, were even quite dangerous. When done correctly however, detoxing and cleansing resets the body and gives it a fresh start by removing excess waste that has accumulated in the colon.
So much waste can build up that many people are carrying around an extra seven to 10 pounds without even realizing it. Holding on to this accumulated waste not only causes a person to feel bloated, sluggish, and generally "blah", it also releases toxins into the body causing inflammation. Anyone feeling the urge to purge?
There are many detoxes and cleanses available, all promising results. Many products will assist in eliminating waste, but at what cost to your body?
Detoxes and cleanses seriously restricting or prohibiting food may empty the colon, but they also put unnecessary stress on the body, creating inflammation that would otherwise be minimized or even avoided if done correctly. In addition, not eating for days affects mood, energy, productivity and puts the body into starvation mode so that when food is re-introduced, instead of metabolizing and using it, the body will store the food instead to make up for being deprived. Oh, and when the body stores food, it stores as fat. Visceral, or belly fat to be precise.
So, for any considering doing a little "spring cleaning" look for something that allows food and encourages eating small, balanced meals comprised of clean, high-quality foods every three hours to keep blood sugar stabilized, insists on increased water intake and recommends light exercise only in an effort to avoid creating undue inflammation during detox.
Enter phase one of the 8 Week Run.
As many of your know, I am certified and licensed through, and partnered with, fitness and nutrition expert, Mark Macdonald, founder of Venice Nutrition, author of the New York Times bestseller, Body Confidence, and who most recently began appearing regularly on HLN with Mike Galanos, speaking on nutrition.
Starting next week, VN Coaches across North America and their clients (including a few of us from Kelowna), as well as a group of contestants from HLN, will embark on an 8 Week Run Health Transformation Challenge.
This three-phase program, developed by Mark Macdonald, sets each individual up to achieve his/her personal health and fitness goals quickly yet safely, beginning with a detox.
Whether the goal is weight loss, weight gain, a decrease in body fat percentage, more energy, or simply learning how to make better food choices, all goals can be achieved.
We will not be "running" as the title may imply, rather doing a "run" in this case indicates the period of time (eight weeks) participants commit to the program.
Rather than simply coach my clients through this amazing program, I have decided to also take this opportunity to take my own health and fitness to the next level. My personal goal is to decrease body fat by six per cent.
Over the course of eight weeks, we will work through three phases - detox, ignite and thrive. Although many are keen to get started early and some, including myself, started this week, March 24 marks the official start date of Phase 1 - detox.
As a health professional, I not only believe in living the programs I teach, but am always striving to share current, up-to-date, safe information in an effort to help more people make healthful choices.
Over the course of the next eight weeks, I will report on participants' stories and results, including my own personal experience, at various points in each phase.
Knowing the quality of the program, the support we have in place, as well as the education provided, I anticipate everyone will experience fantastic results and will have expanded their knowledge around food and nutrition creating a positive, permanent change in their health.
I am especially proud of and excited for my clients, both here in Kelowna and in the U.S., can't wait to see your continued transformations. Kudos and encouragement to all.
