We got wind of this nice story written by John Wolfe, a senior at Merrimack High School. Several groups at the school, 1 which attended PeaceJam, have come together to do a fundraiser for Breast Cancer. It’s great to see this spirit of collaboration! Way to go guys.
Several of the groups and clubs at Merrimack High School have similar aims and are separated only by minor differences in scale and method.
Generally speaking, most of the groups are working for the benefit of the community through the implementation of various programs and fundraisers.
The Random Acts of Kindness Club and the Interact group at MHS recently capitalized on their similarities in order to benefit the community on a broader scale.
The groups decided to work together for a Breast Cancer Bake Sale on Oct. 30. Although the sale was a relatively small one, it did manage to raise $110 in a single day.
Pamela Collins, head of the Tech Center at MHS and of the Random Acts of Kindness Club, said the event was held “because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This all started because I’m trying to have students come up with ideas of things they’re interested in and then build on them yearly.
“So, Jennifer Wright brought up: ‘Hey, you know, it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.’ And she’s part of Interact, and so she asked if we wanted to join in. It was kind of a last-minute thing.”
The money raised by the groups will be sent to the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition, which helps pay for various needs of those with breast cancer.
Collins was optimistic about the potential future cooperation of Random Acts with various other groups.
“This is my hope, and probably that of the students, as well,” she said. “When we had six students go to Peace Jam, it was an eye opener, and it helped students wonder, ‘How can we make connections with other groups and do things locally to make a difference?"
