Here's a report from Jan.13th's Incubator @ Someday Lounge by David Lamkins...
Lady Maria's drummer Jason Cesarz, performing as noyouyesme, opened
with a set of experimental-electronic...I don't know much about this genre...
"justjason" programs his own loops into dual Yamaha RM1X Sequencers and
manipulates them live in real-time!!.... I found this very interesting,& I'd like to
learn more about the process....
Jason's set segued into The Celebrants as Mary Lamkins on bass and Will
Snow on guitar joined Jason on stage... I don't know what to call their music!!
Will, who came to Portland via the New York punk scene, writes most of the
material. Although the band's sound retains some of the rawness of punk, it
has evolved and taken on a complexity and finesse not previously associated
with the genre... Art Punk, New Punk, Atmospheric Punk, ... I don't know. ...
You'd have to hear it and make your own interpretation.
At any rate, I really liked The Celebrants' set. The material has
taken on a new life with the addition of the drummer....Jason also
added sounds from the RM1X setup during songs and transitions,
which gave the set an added coherence, and texture...plus the fact
that MSL and Will both tune down to C!!
MSL had the nut on her Sting Ray bass replaced to accommodate the
heavier strings. She plays through a Behringer Bass Chorus pedal
(always on, I think) into a Hughes & Kettner QC 421 amp.
Will plays... an interesting guitar. How to put this? His guitar
literally looks like he found it in a dumpster. It's an old beat-up
12-string acoustic guitar of indeterminate origin with a magnetic
sound-hole pickup hacked-in. Bits of the guitar appear to be held
together with tape. Three strings (and the corresponding tuners) have
been removed. IIRC, it's the 2nd through 4th strings that are gone.
Will's pedal board is built into an old rectangular guitar case. He
uses a wah, an envelope filter, a chorus, some kind of distortion, and
probably some other stuff...
The pedalboard sends signals to two amps. The clean signal goes to my
(on indefinite loan to Will) homebrew amp (the one with the cabinet
made from plywood siding) while the dirty signal goes to a small
practice amp.
I'm told that The Celebrants had their set filmed & recorded at the board,
so keep your eyes open for the upcoming DVD!!
