Dear iPeace Members

As an artist, I have learned a great deal about copyrights, so I'm sensitive to the subject. It bothers me greatly when I see someone posting art created by someone else without at least giving the artist due credit.
Sometimes people believe that anything, especially images, available on the Internet is theirs for the taking. Not so.

Unless the artwork is your own, in which case you should at least put your copyright on or next to your work, always cite the name of the artist whose work you're showing. If they worked that hard to make the artwork, the lease you can do is give them credit. This also applies to music, poetry and other forms of art.

The only artwork that one can legitimately take/borrow for their own use are (1) their own work or (2) work specifically noted as being in the public domain, usually work that is over 70 years old and the artist is no longer alive and no one else has the rights to the image (e.g. the Mona Lisa)
A good place to look for public domain images is Wikipedia.

To me, honesty and respect are fundamental to peace. Please don't post work without following these guidelines or frankly, we can't be friends until you do and I will delete your posts from my page.

Peace to all especially artists everywhere!

Susan

I'm so glad we agree and I'm delighted I picked the right piece for your...or the right peace for you. Love your graphic, Al. Might just have to borrow it someday to make a point!! :)
Peace and Love for the holidays and always.

Hi Al. I have no beef with your whatsoever. You are absolutely right. Copyright infringement applies to using someone else's work for profit, but there is the courtesy part as well, which is exactly as you say -- if you know the name of the artist, just give them credit. My low res images on any of the sites I post to are not a problem to copy and use in the manner you suggest. I tell artists to not worry about anyone taking a 72dpi image because it simply isn't good enough for anyone to actually produce a good print. I have no problem with anyone using my work to make a point as you suggest -- I'm delighted for the exposure and flattered that the work itself merited being used to make a point.
was taking work off the net and incorporating it 'as is' into their own work, then calling then pretending that the work was all their own. To me, that's just cheating. It would not apply if someone sufficiently altered the image taken and done something artistic with it but that wasn't the case.

Al, if a piece of my would help you to make a point or because you like looking at it, take my low res imate anytime you want . If it's going to be seen in public, just mention my name.
Thanks for your note. I'm sorry if it came across as a bit anal retentive -- I didn't mean it to sound quite so harsh.
Peace and Love,
Susan

Susan, I agree if someone uses Your artwork for monetary gain, but otherwise I feel if someone uses your artwork to help with a "Message of Peace" to another fellow Human Being, which I Love to do, then You should feel Honored that individual felt that about Your art, especially here on iPeace, where We are trying to make a difference for "Peace for You & Yours and the World" and no monetary gain involved.
"Quality prints of this image are available in letter or poster size starting at $95US. Contact me at susan@susanconnors.com for more information.
If I know the artist, I will always give credit to the person that drew it, but unfortunately that it is not the case.
So My Dear Susan, this is just My honest opinion and I hope I haven't offended You as

Peace, Al

Stephanie, thank you so much for adding your voice to the issue of copyright protection. I'm sorry that your experience has included a court case and hope I never have to resolve a dispute in court.
All artists should, of course, take every measure available to them to protect their work. Images are more easily protected than the written word which is just so easy and so tempting to copy. But, there's a big difference between someone taking a poem and keeping it on their computer for their own personal enjoyment versus publishing another person's work as their own.

I do honestly believe that this message can spread out from a place like iPeace where people are more sensitive to the rights of others and I hope it will make people think twice before they rip off someone's work, especially to make a profit from it.

And, if we want to keep the Internet free from governmental involvement, we, all of us, must monitor ourselves and remind others about this from time to time. Artists must also be willing as you are, Stephanie, to fight the battle from time to time so that "copyright" continues to have a real meaning.

Oh susan!! How I agree with you. This is a real problem wherevere one goes, even without going anywhere, even here on internet...actually more here than off.
I am so disturbed about people using other's work. Especially for a gain economically.
I hope that people see your post, but in the outside world, people live to just use others' ideas and art, as if it were morally correct thinking "if others do it, so can I".
I have much experience regarding this...as well as a court case going.
So, keep letting people know about this. Unfortunately people just don't care anymore about what is right and wrong. Caring should be important....but it, like many other things has become something that takes time and gives no profit, and so...why care?
Good luck in the future...to all of the creative souls out there!
Stephanie
