The Consequences of Counterterrorism

A dry, almost boring litany of devastating fact after devastating fact about how "counter terrorism" is targeting every US citizen who is even remotely non-average. Must see.

two examples:

# The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency claims it can identity the occupants of each house, their nationality and their political affiliation, in 130 of the largest cities in the US.

# TIPS (Terrorism Information and Prevention System) intended to recruit millions of American truckers, letter carriers, train conductors and others, as informers. The pilot program would have one in every 24 Americans living in ten of the largest cities report anything unusual or suspicious. This program was shut down when a reporter from Australia pointed out that the US would have a higher percentage of informers than at the hight of Stazi Germany (East German State Security).

my comment:
TIPS was approved by Bush. I can not accept incompetence as an explanation for their having come up with the idea in the first place. This plan failed, but it gives you (well, me anyway) an idea of what it is they want. Did anyone say "proto-fascist"? I agree. I just want to point out that proto-fascism, if left to its own devices, inevitably leads to full-blown fascism. Proto fascism is the lead-up to fascism under the direction of fascists who are only "proto" while they have not yet achieved their goal.

The speaker mentions another program that IS in operation, that was created by Wolfowitz.

Laura Donohue: The Consequences of Counterterrorism

On the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorists attacks, the stakes remain high for national security.

Donohue re-calculates the cost of counterterrorist law to the United States and United Kingdom.

She warns that the proliferation of biological and nuclear materials, together with extremists willing to sacrifice themselves, may drive each country to take increasingly drastic measures.

And the dominant "Security or Freedom" framework for evaluating counterterrorist law fails to capture an important characteristic: increased executive power that shifts the balance between branches of government.

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) is a Department of Defense combat support agency and a member of the national Intelligence Community (IC). NGA develops imagery and map-based intelligence solutions for U.S. national defense, homeland security and safety of navigation.

NGA provides timely, relevant and accurate geospatial intelligence in support of national security objectives. The term "geospatial intelligence" means the exploitation and analysis of imagery and geospatial information to describe, assess and visually depict physical features and geographically referenced activities on the Earth. Geospatial intelligence consists of imagery, imagery intelligence and geospatial (e.g., mapping, charting and geodesy) information.

Information collected and processed by NGA is tailored for customer-specific solutions. By giving customers ready access to geospatial intelligence, NGA provides support to civilian and military leaders and contributes to the state of readiness of U.S. military forces. NGA also contributes to humanitarian efforts, such as tracking floods and disaster support, and to peacekeeping.
