Recently, on the Travel Channel TV, on Anthony Bourdain's travel show I saw a brief spot on the Plain of Jars in Laos. This ancient site is littered with jars, some as large as five men holding hands in a circle. No one knows how these jars were made or who made them. Some remains have been found inside a few of the jars, but overall the jars were all empty. Ancient legends say that the jars were vessels which held wine for the local giants. Other theories state that the jars were placed on a much used trade route and were used for storage. Whatever these jars were for may never be known, but the people in th surrounding area of Laos suffer from unexploded and unremoved land mines left over from the Viet Nam war.
