More
Fear breeds Prejudice. Prejudice breeds hate. Hate breeds Greed. Greed breeds economic instability. It's all a connected web...each and everyone as a part in this web. Some choose to be on the positive side, and others, don't.
Can we change the world?
Definitely
More about me
“You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.” The iconic lyric from the song that forever changed the way people view Peace, has become my motto. I dream of a better future for myself, my family, the country, the world, humanity. Some say that I am naïve and too young to realize that this is not possibly. I say they are wrong. Not only can today’s youth (and adults) change the world for the better, but they have already begun.
My name is Mia Xochil Hernandez, and I am a 16 year old Junior. California is my home, though I wish to travel the world, learn about new cultures, traditions, sciences, and history, try new things, and meet new people. I am a strong advocate of spreading Peace, Love, Equality and Understanding for all, and an avid supporter of Alternative Energy Sources, Amnesty International, and the “Co-Exist” theory. When I first learned about the People to People Organization, my stomach did flips. There was a program from International Teenager Peace Ambassadors?! And to Australia?! And I’m nominated?! For me, it was a dream come true to find something as amazing as this, and to have the opportunity to apply.
I have always been involved somehow in my community, weather it be protesting inequalities in education, Environmental Study Programs, Leadership Conferences or volunteering. When it comes to making a change, “No” is not an option. When I’ve set my mind on something, I don’t stop until I’ve completed it. When my family and I discovered that tuition for this program was 7,000 dollars, my family was skeptical. I’ve set myself on fundraising the entire tuition and more to cover incidentals. I see myself spending 22 days of my summer with the other delegates of Northern California in Australia with the People to People Program learning about the government, cultures, traditions, and people of Australia. I will try new things, meet new people, and experience firsthand science (Great Barrier Reef!) and change completely as a person to become a greater Peace Ambassador. The fact that this dream of mine is made possible by thousands of people, gives me hope. If more adults invested in the youth of today, our future would be twice as bright!
At school, I am an active member of 14 different clubs and organizations such as: Girls Achieving in Non-Traditional Subjects (GAINS), Interact (A Rotary International Project), Amnesty International (Officer), Multi-Cultural Club (Officer), Best Buddies, and Link Crew “Students Helping Students Succeed”. Outside of school, my activism is broadened to organizations such as: Amnesty International , The Save Darfur Collation , Teens Going Green, Stop Global Warming, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA. In addition, my parents have founded Hearts and Hands Elders: California Peace Movement. A non-profit created to promote Peace in California barrios to stop gang violence through understanding and education. I’ve been an active teen leader for the past five years, and have attended several different Latino Leadership Conferences with the Hearts and Hands Elders.
My interests vary from social advocate to social butterfly and I love almost everything in between. I have a passion for the arts: photography, graphic design, music, film making, and creative writing. My other interest vary from politics, small business management, history, cultural studies reading, learning new things, meeting new people and Volunteering.
I hope that many more students learn to accept, and co-exist to spread peace through understanding to overall better our world. “I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will live as one.”

So much around us and inside us is sad so ”We cannot always Shine” that is OK. Admitting our sorrow and grief is the first step to healing and peace.
We can also find ourselves through ”Sagas, Dreams and Myths” within witch so much human wisdom is hidden.
We can close our eyes and just remember through all the music our heart and soul has saved, and we can share it with others in ”Unforgettable Music”
We can travel to get inspiration and understanding for our different cultures. Why not go to ”Sweden starting in Lapland” You will find my roots there involved in the midnight sun and the northern light *smile*
